Implementation lessons

Early lessons included the need to collect emissions data in a consistent manner, anchor the project in its net-zero program governance, and expand the scope of the project beyond carbon footprint data to include other environmental topics for a more holistic approach.

The next question concerned the IT architecture, organized into three layers. The top layer relates to the collection of raw sustainability, financial, and operational data from various source systems. The middle management layer processes and standardizes the data. Finally, a bottom planning and reporting layer delivers insights for sustainability decision-making.

The rollout began by uploading carbon footprint data into 麻豆原创 Sustainability Footprint Management across one company code and will increase to five company codes before the system goes live in Q3 of this year. It is useful to note the iterative approach our team has taken, which has allowed for the collection and integration of data from different sources and the testing of use cases including our听ability to support businesses amid changes such as those recently initiated by the EU鈥檚 new Omnibus package.

How High Tech Helps S.Oleum Deliver ESG Metrics You Can Trust /2023/08/high-tech-helps-s-oleum-deliver-esg-metrics/ Tue, 08 Aug 2023 12:15:25 +0000 /?p=206310 How can a three-year-old agroforestry company produce trustworthy, sustainable feedstock 鈥 raw materials for finished goods, energy, and more 鈥 while reducing the amount of carbon in the atmosphere?

鈥淲e do that by using the biodiversity of this region, the Cerrado in Brazil,鈥 Francisco de Blanco, S.Oleum co-founder and CEO, told 麻豆原创 at the company鈥檚 headquarters, an innovative farm just outside Jo茫o Pinheiro.

Why the Brazilian outback? This tropical savanna is home to the maca煤ba, a highly adaptable oil-producing tree with a penchant for scrubbing harmful CO2 from the air. Maca煤ba fruit yields advanced vegetable oils (AVOs) and high-protein food 鈥 and it can be 15 times more productive than soybeans.

鈥淲e are restoring the landscape that was deforested…Macau虂ba was native here many, many years ago,鈥 Felipe Morbi, S.Oleum co-founder and Agroforestry VP,听 said. 鈥淣ow we are bringing back these trees, and also all the other species, to restore this biodiversity.鈥

S.Oleum seeks to accomplish this scientifically, using maca煤ba and other crops in an integrated crop-livestock-forest approach, according to Morbi. The goal is to create working farms that rejuvenate degraded, low-yielding soil 鈥 and that sequester into the soil more carbon than they generate.

How S.Oleum Will Use High Tech to Get Back to Brazil鈥檚 Roots

Science-Based Approach to Reforesting the Cerrado

鈥淲e are looking for the balance of the system,鈥 Morbi said in a new . 鈥淲e will measure the amount of carbon in the soil, the moisture, the biodiversity in terms of the plants we have, and also native animals coming back to the area.鈥

Toward that end, S.Oleum is starting small, but aiming big. Most of the current crop grows on a 700-hectare, or more than 1,700-acre, pilot farm. But S.Oleum intends to plant more than 65 million additional maca煤ba trees by 2029, which would reforest 180,00 hectares 鈥 about 444,800 acres 鈥 in Brazil鈥檚 southeastern state of Minas Gerais.

Over time, maca煤ba trees also help improve the nutrient and moisture capacity of the soil, making it easier to grow other crops, according to de Blanco. And S.Oleum increases farm productivity by growing carefully chosen crops in between rows of maca煤ba trees, such as sunflowers, peanuts, and yucas.

鈥淚f you do it right, agriculture as a system is positive for the environment,鈥 de Blanco said. 鈥淧lants that were deforested a few decades ago, they are currently in a poor state because they were depleted by poor management…We believe there are better ways, and that鈥檚 what we are pursuing here.鈥

An innovative case in point: maca煤ba trees increase a biome鈥檚 carbon sequestration levels. Removing this greenhouse gas helps more than the planet; S.Oleum also generates revenue by selling carbon credits and building trust via its data.

Any Little Bit of Data

鈥淎ny little thing, any generation of data that R&D is currently developing, is extremely important,鈥 Mirelle Santos, S.Oleum Agroforestry R&D manager, said. 鈥淲e want to deploy technologies as dictated by those urgent needs.鈥

This could include remote sensing via drones that run fruit-recognition software, according to Santos. This would help S.Oleum gather and compile data quickly, without human error 鈥 and without sending workers, who must dress in personal protective equipment (PPE) to defend against snakes, mosquitos, the brutal Cerrado sun (even in winter), and dangerous maca煤ba thorns, which grow even on seedlings.

S.Oleum鈥檚 intricate business model combines agriculture, forestry, biodiversity, and carbon offsetting 鈥 and that leads to a lot of complexity. 麻豆原创 technology will be an important differentiator for this small enterprise, as well as a foundation for its future growth.

鈥淲e have a big project to run; so, a lot of people, a lot of machines, a lot of suppliers,鈥 Morbi said. 鈥淎nd we need everything in the right moment, in the right way.鈥

How to Best Manage ESG Metrics

鈥淲e have a very integrated system, and a very circular way to produce things,鈥 de Blanco said. 鈥淔inding out where waste is generated 鈥 and where it鈥檚 being used 鈥 is very important to ensure the carbon intensity and the circularity of our systems at our entire site…This is where 麻豆原创 helps us.鈥

That鈥檚 a big deal because compliant, transparent ESG metrics are crucial to S.Oleum鈥檚 success, according to de Blanco.

Measuring the Carbon Footprint of Employees Can Help You Make More Informed and Strategic Business Decisions /2022/11/measuring-employee-carbon-footprint-business-decisions/ Wed, 23 Nov 2022 12:15:31 +0000 /?p=200792 If there鈥檚 one thing that knowledge workers have learned throughout the pandemic, it鈥檚 that they can be highly productive working remotely. Employees with strong digital skills were abruptly cast out of offices and forced to work from home. Before long, many began relocating away from cities to less populated areas, or from colder regions to vacation destinations 鈥 sometimes in other countries. Unbound from the office, knowledge workers became free-range employees 鈥 and most don鈥檛 want to go back.

According to a pulse survey conducted by the , 76% of employees want flexibility in where they work and 93% flexibility in when they work. The desire for flexible work is strongest among women, working parents, and employees of color who have shown gains in feelings of belonging working remotely. Specifically, 81% of Black respondents say they want flexibility in where they work, compared to 75% of White respondents.

This data is in direct contrast to what most executives report that they want in post-pandemic workforce policies. Of those currently working fully remotely, nearly half of all executives surveyed (44%) want to work from the office every day, compared to 17% of employees. And 75% of these executives say they want to work from the office three to five days a week versus only 34% of employees.

So, what are companies to do? How can they make informed decisions about what鈥檚 best for leaders, for the business, and for their employees?

Applying a Sustainability Lens to Work Location Decision

One way of looking at the issues of return to office or hybrid work is from a business sustainability perspective. For example, if forcing people back to the office will make critical employees more likely to leave their jobs, you have a real flight risk issue impacting the sustainability of your business. Your business must have enough people with the right skills at the right time to propel it forward.

The company had committed to lowering its enterprise carbon emissions and wanted a mechanism to support managers鈥 operational workforce planning processes.

麻豆原创 built a proof of concept (PoC) application in just one day once the employee survey was collected. The PoC decision support application was realized as follows:

Employee address data was acquired from records using the standard delivered API. 麻豆原创 Data Quality Management and microservices for location data were used for both data cleansing 鈥 a big bonus since the customer was able to cleanse inaccurate addresses in 麻豆原创 SuccessFactors Employee Central 鈥 and data enrichment to geocode the home and work addresses with the latitude, longitude, and altitude information. The world of geo-location services was opened.

Demographic measures and dimensions were acquired from 麻豆原创 SuccessFactors Workforce Analytics using the standard 麻豆原创 Analytics Cloud connector.

While trying to understand employee sentiment on workplace and flexibility preferences, a survey was created using Employee Experience Management Solutions from 麻豆原创 and Qualtrics. The survey allowed for employees, whose jobs enabled them to work from home, to answer questions relating to their preferences for the number of days a week they wanted to work from home and their commute (means and time of travel). The insights gathered allowed us to understand that the travel time to work 鈥 not distance 鈥 is a major factor in determining retention risk amongst various demographic groups and so the information was valuable input for the flight risk tool they had in 麻豆原创 Analytics Cloud enterprise reporting.

was then able to use external Web services and geo-location services to calculate the travel distance and travel time to work by various means of transport. One of the services was then able to determine the carbon emissions for the means of travel that the employee had specified. The commute travel time by job grade is a leading predictor of flight risk and is easily added to the flight risk prediction dataset.

The systems also gathered information of all the corporate and possible work locations. This opened the possibility for work location optimization, but it was not part of the scope of the PoC.

The data was then blended using 麻豆原创 Business Technology Platform, specifically 麻豆原创 Data Warehouse Cloud, and anonymization views were defined to protect actual home addresses from being shown. Real-time 麻豆原创 HANA data anonymization allowed the application to use actual addresses to accurately calculate the travel metrics while safely anonymizing sensitive data for dashboard visualization and drill-down.

A dashboard was built and refined to analyze and interrogate the employee commute measures and identify specific employee carbon emissions each working day. Geospatial representation and visualization were built and demonstrated with interactive zoom and data filters. A what-if scenario was demonstrated with graphs and metrics calculated in real time to show the specific carbon emission impact of changing the percentage of time spent working remotely.

Executives can make better decisions about the impact of employees going back to the office and how often, considering the social and actual carbon emissions from commutes in their people planning. As the world鈥檚 largest plant-based consumer packaged goods company, Upfield operates in 95 countries with a workforce of 4,200 employees.

The company was founded in 2018 as a spin-off from听Unilever and its mission is to deliver plant products for healthier lives and happier people for a better planet.

鈥淯pfield is a quite new company that operates in a very dynamic market environment sensitive to social integrators and economic indicators,鈥 said Anand Mathew, platform lead, Supply Chain Applications at Upfield. 鈥淚n terms of planning and logistics, key objectives are to ensure a high service level. Moreover, we aim to reduce product cost while ensuring minimal obsolescence as customer demands are ever changing.鈥

Upfield set specific targets along its supply chain. 鈥淔or example, as plant-based is part of our formulations and product development, we must be sure to move towards a 100% natural formulation. Not meeting this goal in particular markets can impact us with negative publicity around packaging or product quality. Also, recent disruptions due to COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine 鈥 the biggest producer for sunflower oil, which is a key product ingredient 鈥 forced us to change and update formulations very quickly and pass that information on to manufacturing, transportation, and our customers,鈥 Mathew explained.

鈥淥ther requirements related to sustainability are to be plastic free for our packages or disclose our methane footprint, including the CO2 product footprint. All this deeply implicated our IT systems and how we run our supply chain. It must be reflected in our product development, manufacturing, and distribution, and ultimately be reported,鈥 the executive added.

The Need for Integrated Solutions along the Supply Chain

The IT solutions portfolio taken over from Unilever didn鈥檛 meet Upfield鈥檚 needs to align objectives along the entire supply chain and had to be updated to ensure the highest level of integration.

鈥淭o achieve our product strategy goals, we have been fostering integration of disparate systems with as the backbone. This integration allowed us to be where we are now,鈥 Mathew said. 鈥淔or instance, we manage around 4,000 specifications for ingredients and up to 2,500 recipes with 麻豆原创 Product Lifecycle Management.鈥

For supply chain planning, Upfield is using for demand, response, supply, and sales and operations planning (S&OP). Mathew explained: 鈥淭wo hundred of our business users use 麻豆原创 Integrated Business Planning in 95 countries. The regions have slight variations in managing the solution, but all countries are using demand planning so that we get our S&OP numbers entirely through 麻豆原创 Integrated Business Planning.鈥

The executive added: 鈥淲e are looking to use machine learning-based statistical forecasting via capabilities that the latest 麻豆原创 Integrated Business Planning version provides. Then we can build Python scripts into our end-to-end planning process. We use it for direct procurement for our products and indirect procurement,鈥 Mathew remarked.

For its logistics processes, Upfield is leveraging 麻豆原创 Transportation Management and . Ocean movements are managed via 麻豆原创 Transportation Management and land movements with both.

鈥淲e use for calculating transportation movements, planning shipments, and route optimization. Resulting freight orders are passed on to the carrier. Settlements are then done within 麻豆原创 Business Network for Logistics. There, our carriers can either log directly into the carrier tenant to accept or reject preorder or use the booking functionality to specify preorder execution,鈥 Mathew explained. 鈥淭he network supports fixing settlements after freight order execution. Overall, 麻豆原创 Business Network for Logistics provides better communication with our carriers.鈥

Achieving Higher Agility and Resilience

Upfield is also tracking the life cycle of each product until its retirement. 鈥淎t each stage, every system has to be aligned to avoid the risk of obsolescence, and we have been able to reduce cost with help from 麻豆原创 solutions,鈥 Mathew said. 鈥溌槎乖 S/4HANA and supply chain solutions helped us be more agile. The main advantage is the integrated planning capability we have across our supply chain. The enormity of our modern day challenges — including reaching net-zero emissions and significantly reducing plastic and other waste — means that we need to develop entirely new value chains. No business can do that on its own.

Businesses and organizations need to act together, leveraging collective networks, influence, and expertise, in order to bring real transformation and generate positive outcomes.

With only nine percent of the 400 million tons of plastic produced every year , plastics is an issue where the urgent need to act is being recognized at the highest levels of global policy-making. United Nations (UN) member states to adopt a legally binding multilateral treaty on plastic pollution, the text of which explicitly underlines the importance of promoting the . executive director of the UN Environment Programme, the agreement is the “most important international multilateral environmental deal since [the] Paris [climate accord].”

Without collective and meaningful action, ocean plastic from 11 million tons in 2016 to 29 million tons in 2040, wreaking havoc on fragile marine ecosystems. This dire situation is a clarion call to act on extended producer responsibility (EPR), a policy framework that shifts financial responsibility from governments onto product producers for the management, treatment, and disposal of consumer products. This creates incentives for manufacturers to develop products that are more recyclable and less resource-intensive, in effect preventing waste at the source.
