India’s digital landscape is evolving at an unprecedented pace, fuelled by rapid internet adoption and strong economic growth, positioning the country as a global leader in innovation. From adoption to sustainability drive, the coming year will accelerate India’s trajectory as a global powerhouse. 听Building on this momentum, let鈥檚 look at key technology trends that will redefine business resilience, customer experience, and sustainable growth:

  1. India鈥檚 rise in the global supply chain: The supply chain and logistics sectors stand at an inflection point and is poised for exponential growth. This growth is driven by factors ranging from rising disposable incomes, government initiatives like “Make in India,” and the rise of emerging technologies.
  • AI will be the foundation for supply chain resilience: In the coming year, the country will accelerate building autonomous, AI-enabled supply chains to enhance operational efficiency and responsiveness. As companies navigate more complex supply chains, AI-enabled programs will be essential for them to stay competitive and efficiently address issues as they happen. Organizations will use cutting-edge capabilities along with additional tools like digital twins to monitor asset wear and tear, enhance lead-time predictions, and investigate production problems more quickly. Businesses will be able to produce quantifiable business results even when disruption seems like a normal part of life if AI is integrated, relevant, and accountable.
  • Anti-fragile supply chains will become the new normal: 鈥楢nti-fragile鈥 supply chains will be the defacto standard, as Indian businesses strive to future-proof their supply chains from incoming disruptions. Using data-driven technologies such as analytics and machine learning, organizations will be able to better predict risks, enhance business resilience, and optimize operations. For a diverse manufacturing ecosystem with a growing export potential such as India, anti-fragile supply chains will not only be a necessity but a strategic advantage enabling industries to stay competitive in increasingly dynamic market conditions.

  1. India鈥檚 rise as the data powerhouse: India is rapidly transforming from an emerging market to a developed economy and digital technology with all its data sits at the center of this evolution. The government鈥檚 focus on fostering secure data privacy environment is an impetus to fostering conducive business climate and stakeholder confidence.
  • Establishing trust in data will become the top priority for leaders.听In the AI era, data will be the cornerstone of resilience and creativity. Businesses will continue to find it difficult to employ emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) or make well-informed decisions if they lack confidence in the data they possess and use. It will take more than just technology to establish this trust; leaders must increase data literacy and adopt a data strategy that prioritizes quality and capacity.
  • A data fabric will become accepted as a pre-cursor to using AI at scale: Making sure AI is reliable, accountable, and pertinent is still a major concern as companies use it more and more to spur innovation. AI systems must be trained on actual, business-specific data rather than artificial or generic data to produce precise, useful insights. A growing number of enterprises will employ a data fabric as their data strategy to make this a reality because it offers the deep business context and semantics needed for AI to be applied in actual business applications.

  1. AI will become a critical component of customer experience: In 2025, AI will be at the heart of all customer experiences, helping businesses understand and connect with their customers like never before. Companies will use AI to deliver hyper-personalized interactions, seamless automation, and predictive insights, making every interaction thoughtful, instant, and meaningful. From intelligent copilots handling complex inquiries to sentiment analysis enhancing emotional connections, AI will help businesses customize models for unique operational needs, and drive flexibility, competitive advantage, and innovation at scale, creating customer experiences that not only meet but exceed expectations.

  1. With potential policy changes on the horizon, leaders must prioritize transparency to reduce risk and boost sustainability: In 2025, we will see companies focusing on their 鈥榞reen lines鈥 鈥 measuring environmental impact 鈥攁longside the traditional top and bottom lines of revenue. Enhanced connectivity with everyone and everything in your ecosystem will increase transparency and traceability in supply chains. Leaders will prioritize visibility and transparency to gain real-time insights, enabling them to monitor operations and safeguard against unethical practices. As the coming year brings a shift in policy and governance priorities, technology solutions can help businesses track their compliance with constantly changing regulations to back up their sustainability claims. For instance, India is likely to see increased emphasis on local sourcing and production, prompting businesses to refine their tracking of materials at every stage, ensuring accountability and fostering sustainable practices throughout the supply chain. Enhanced visibility will also help manage risks and improve collaboration among supply chain partners.

By 2025, India will cement its position as a global economic powerhouse, driving innovation through AI and resilient supply chains. As we keep our focus on cutting-edge technologies, data trust, and sustainability, India is set to create a competitive edge in an increasingly interconnected global marketplace. These trends will enable India to rise as a global leader, poised for exponential growth in the digital era.

The tide is turning. Consumers are demanding more from businesses than just great products, and companies are increasingly seeking ways to meet their sustainability goals and create social value. While consumers want to know products are made with social responsibility in mind, with a positive impact on people and planet, companies are facing both internal drivers and external pressures to develop solid ESG strategies, contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), build local economies, and ensure compliance with emerging regulations.

Meeting the demands from all sides goes beyond traditional sourcing. It requires a strategic investment into goods and services 鈥 starting with upstream services such as procurement to core operations such as product development and sales to downstream distribution that includes the last mile – from businesses that serve the world鈥檚 most vulnerable people and ecosystems: social enterprises. These organizations prioritize social and environmental good alongside financial sustainability, creating jobs, empowering communities, and fostering responsibility.

Why now?

A recent by Impact Europe, Sattva and 麻豆原创 reveals a clear trend: 80% of businesses see social procurement as a solution to meeting their sustainability goals. This isn’t just about responding to consumer demand. Companies are recognizing the potential for innovation and growth through collaboration with social enterprises.

Take India, for example, a global leader with over two million social enterprises.听 Imagine the possibilities for integrating these businesses into supply chains, not just for social good, but for fresh perspectives and untapped talent.

However, there’s a “gap between intention and action,” as the report highlights. While many companies have adopted diverse sourcing practices, only half prioritize supporting local economies and a circular economy. This disconnect underscores the need for a deeper understanding of social procurement’s potential.

The good news is that the trend is moving in the right direction. The rise of social procurement aligns perfectly with the growing focus on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) targets.

For example, social procurement can directly address both the “S” and the 鈥淕鈥 that sits at the heart of ESG by supporting small businesses. This is especially pertinent in India where the report has found that MSMEs form 29% of the GDP and more than 90% of businesses in India are micro and small. This focus on social responsibility not only has benefits for local communities, but also enhances a company’s reputation with investors, customers, and employees who value ethical practices.

The report has also revealed that within India there is a unique context for businesses to integrate small suppliers and businesses in larger supply chains which advances and supports inclusivity. Socially responsible suppliers are often open to innovation and able to adapt faster, leading to a more sustainable supply chain overall, and are much more likely to adopt fair labor practices ensuring ethical treatment of workers throughout the supply chain. This includes safe working conditions, living wages, and respect for worker rights.

By sourcing from businesses owned and operated by minorities, women, or people with disabilities, companies contribute to a more inclusive economy which expands opportunities for traditionally marginalized groups. Strong social practices have the potential to attract and retain employees leading to a more stable and resilient workforce. The benefits of prioritizing people and planet have never been greater.

In terms of SDGs, the report found that social procurement directly addresses 7 out of the 17 SDG goals 鈥 a massive stride forward in achieving a better and more sustainable future for all.

The power of collaboration

Social procurement is more than just a transaction. It’s about building partnerships that create a ripple effect of social impact.

A prime example is Even Cargo, India’s first all-female, last-mile e-commerce logistics provider. By partnering with social enterprises like Even Cargo, businesses can empower communities, create jobs, and drive progress toward a more equitable future. As Yogesh Kumar, Founder of Even Cargo said: “We believe jobs shouldn’t be decided based on gender.” As such, their comprehensive training program equips women with the skills they need to succeed in a traditionally male-dominated field, fostering financial independence and self-reliance.

However, Even Cargo’s journey wasn’t without challenges. Initially, they faced societal resistance to their innovative approach, but perseverance and recognition, including a positive feature in The New Yorker, led to a pivotal collaboration with Amazon. This partnership provided valuable employment opportunities for Even Cargo’s trained women.

Still, Kumar identified a critical bottleneck 鈥 the lack of mobile women in India’s workforce. This realization shone a spotlight on the need for a broader approach to social procurement, one that goes beyond simply hiring from a specific demographic. Even Cargo advocates for creating a more inclusive work environment across the board. This includes promoting gender-balanced warehouses, creating workspaces with amenities catering to both genders, and offering flexible working hours to support work-life balance, particularly for mothers.

Collaboration with social enterprises like Even Cargo offers numerous benefits to corporations.听 Leveraging their expertise allows us to improve our own diversity and inclusion strategies, creating a more holistic and equitable workplace culture.

Building a sustainable future

The future of social procurement is bright. To mitigate challenges and bolster opportunities for these partnerships, we formed a coalition at the Social Procurement Roundtable to activate the social procurement ecosystem in the country, foster collaboration and active involvement of key stakeholders, and advocate for policy changes that promote responsible business practices. These are all key priorities to that underpin 麻豆原创鈥檚 commitment to drive transformation and entrench sustainability to empower businesses to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Businesses of all sizes can embrace social procurement. Intermediaries can play a crucial role in facilitating connections and educating companies on these opportunities. Long-term partnerships with social enterprises offer significant benefits for both parties. Let’s work together to build a more sustainable and equitable future where businesses are a force for good.

In the expanses of India, where healthcare resources can be limited, the use of AI technology from 麻豆原创 and CleaVision is casting a ray of hope for newborn babies vulnerable to Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), a condition that 鈥 if left untreated 鈥 can lead to irreversible blindness. This groundbreaking combination of medicine and technology provides a tangible solution to prevent blindness in newborns across India.

ROP is a disease that affects premature babies and impacts India significantly since the country has more than 听born premature every year, the highest number in the world. 鈥淎bout 25% to 40% of these babies have a risk of developing ROP,鈥 says Dr. Anand Vinekar, head of the Department of Pediatric Retina at听听in Bangalore and the founder of听, a program working to address the problem of ROP in rural India.

Blindness from ROP is largely preventable if identified and treated within the first weeks of birth. But while the screening itself is not difficult for a trained provider, the challenge of detecting ROP in millions of premature babies is profound. Each preterm infant must be screened multiple times during the critical period, equating to upwards of 20 million exams per year if every preterm baby is screened, Dr. Vinekar says.

The vast distances that many families in India live from hospitals, combined with a critical shortage of specialized doctors, make this a nearly impossible task using current methods. However, KIDROP, CleaVision, and 麻豆原创 are using AI to help bridge this gap and offer a lifeline to infants like Hanvith C.

How AI Is Helping Prevent Infant Blindness in India

Video producers: Matt Dillman, Rana Hamzakadi

Hanvith C鈥檚 parents faced the fear that haunts many new parents in India. 鈥淢y father was blind,鈥 his mother shares, voicing a worry rooted in personal history. The prospect of her newborn inheriting blindness was a terrifying thought that led the parents to seek help 鈥 a decision that would alter the course of their child鈥檚 life.

Hanvith C鈥檚 father recounts their fortunate encounter with a KIDROP team at their local hospital. Thanks to this vital outreach effort bringing sophisticated medical screening to India鈥檚 rural communities, Hanvith C was diagnosed with ROP symptoms. But with successful follow-up treatment in Bangalore, his story became one of hope rather than despair.

The KIDROP program is now working to bring these life-changing diagnostic abilities to more underserved areas by training non-physicians to use field imaging cameras to take digital images of babies鈥 eyes. But the resultant thousands of retinal scans that need to be reviewed for signs of ROP creates additional challenges. 鈥淣ow you have plenty of images and no one to read them,鈥 says Dr. Vinekar, explaining the bottleneck in the diagnostic and treatment process.

This is where CleaVision鈥檚 solution, supported by听听technology 鈥 including听听(麻豆原创 BTP) and the听听solution 鈥 becomes a game changer. The eye images are uploaded to CleaVision, which automates the identification of retina and blood vessel features and makes a recommendation on whether ROP is present in premature babies. The system then allows doctors to quickly identify and prioritize at-risk children.

鈥淲e are not going to base our entire decision and management on what [the AI] says,鈥 Dr. Vinekar clarifies. 鈥淏ut it鈥檒l help us to triage these images.鈥 This reflects a balanced approach towards leveraging technology while maintaining the primacy of human judgment in critical healthcare decisions.

The impact of from 麻豆原创 and CleaVision is not just on the technological and medical fronts; it鈥檚 profoundly personal and life-changing. Hanvith C鈥檚 parents emphasize the importance of awareness and early intervention and hope other families benefit from this technology.

Their dreams for Hanvith C鈥檚 future are simple yet profound. 鈥淲e want him to become a doctor, do good, and help other people when he grows up,鈥 his mother says. 鈥淛ust like they helped us at the very beginning of his life.鈥

About CleaVision

听is a sustainable social venture founded in 2017 by Chirag Gupta and Narayan V K as part of the听麻豆原创 One Billion Lives听program. The CleaVision initiative uses intelligent technologies to deliver timely diagnosis for eye diseases, such as ROP, to those without access to healthcare in developing countries.

CleaVision鈥檚 solution integrates image data processing with AI tools to automate the identification of retina and blood vessel features and to make a recommendation on whether ROP is present in premature babies. The screening data is then served to hospitals and can be reviewed by qualified medical professionals via a telemedicine network. The goal is to scale the screening program by using trained non-physicians to capture the retinal images and CleaVision technology to review the image files, saving significant time for technicians and ROP specialists.

There鈥檚 no better-proving ground for the incredible power of digitalized food chains than India, one of the most populated countries worldwide. As India鈥檚 leading food agritech company, 听has pioneered a data-driven strategy designed to close the gap between supply and demand, decreasing food waste and increasing revenue for every organization across the value chain.

鈥淲ith one integrated platform that connects data from farmers through processing, warehouses, and retail, we are transforming the traditional food chain from supplier-driven to demand-driven,鈥 said Karthik Jayaraman, co-founder and managing director at WayCool. 鈥淲e selected听听because it is a flexible, cloud-based foundation for our growing business.听听provides a single source of truth company-wide and across our ecosystem, helping us produce and deliver the delicious food that consumers want on their table.鈥

The company has already reduced food wastage by up to 96% while improving the average income of farmers by over 13%.

WayCool Creates Sustainable Food Supply Chain with Cloud Tech

Data Insights Align Food Supply with Demand

Putting predictability and farming in the same sentence might seem like a stretch in a world rocked by disruptions like extreme weather and geopolitical conflicts. However, WayCool orchestrates a groundbreaking collaborative effort. It starts with farmers who produce the fruits, vegetables, and other staples that feed the Indian population and extends to partners, warehouse operations, distribution, and retailers.

鈥淪haring information with our partners in procurement who run processing and warehouse facilities, along with transportation logistics and retail, we can align supply with the right pricing for greater efficiencies and governance that produces the highest quality products,鈥 said Avinash Kasinathan, chief technology officer at WayCool. 鈥淒ata transparency also means that farmers can base field production on actual market demand and consumption.鈥

Farmer Income Grows with Data-Driven Strategy

WayCool鈥檚 ability to trace products from farm to end consumer provides the company and its ecosystem with forecasting and planning insights based on real-time customer feedback and market demands. Using this connected data, WayCool makes recommendations to farmers on what fruits and vegetables to grow for the highest yields and uptake at the best prices.

Fourth-generation farmer Hari Prasad, located in a village called Karnataka on the outskirts of East Bangalore, is one of the over 200,000 farmers that WayCool provides with detailed cultivation plans.

鈥淯nlike traditional farming, WayCool recommends what to plant, when, and where, letting us know up front what they鈥檒l purchase at fair prices based on harvest time frames and factoring in staggered market demands,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e don鈥檛 have to worry about whether or not we鈥檒l sell our yield, and we can calculate continuous earnings in a more predictable and consistent manner.鈥

Although farmers may have smaller yields, harvesting crops on a more consistent basis throughout the year levels out supply and demand spikes and downturns. If crop prices fall one week and rise the next, farmers can average out major risks with a steadier stream of income over time.

AI-Based Technologies Reduce Waste and Boost Crop Yields

WayCool has infused听AI听capabilities across its digitalized supply chain to increase quality yield and decrease waste. AI is built into the recommendation engine that tells retailers which products on their shelves will sell faster according to store location demographics. In the field, farmers use AI-based image recognition to quickly identify plant diseases and set up treatment plans. -based sensors in the soil send farmers alerts on weather patterns to guide more cost-efficient and sustainable irrigation decisions. For WayCool and its partners, sustainable business encompasses the full range of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) commitments. Digitalization has an important role, for example, in regenerative farming practices. Farmers can use data-driven insights to produce stronger seeds for biodiversity, growing crops that are more climate-resilient and use less water and fertilizer in healthier soil.

Looking ahead, Jayaraman is eager to bring WayCool鈥檚 digitalized business model from India to other regions such as Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

鈥淭he food supply chain is a huge global market, yet agribusiness is one of the least digitized industries,鈥 said Jayaraman. 鈥淲e鈥檝e experienced how technology is revolutionizing food chains in India, and we鈥檙e excited about bringing people in other parts of the world greater access to affordable, quality food for the next generation of sustainable agriculture.鈥

Leaders Who Develop “New-Age” Mindset Will Nurture Winning Cultures /india/2023/05/leaders-who-develop-new-age-mindset-will-nurture-winning-cultures/ Sat, 27 May 2023 07:32:37 +0000 /india/?p=5789 New-age leadership is anchored in emotional intelligence, flexibility, and purpose.

Although leadership skills are essential for the growth of any organization, who we see as an 鈥榚ffective leader鈥 has significantly evolved.

The autocratic and rigid management style once that was the norm, may not cut it with today鈥檚 workforce. As a result, new-age leadership is anchored in emotional intelligence, flexibility, and purpose. These leaders are more aligned with the unique needs of the workforce and are unafraid to bring their own distinct ideas and life experiences to inform how they lead.

Emotional intelligence is the primary driver of success

An Accenture study shows that 61% of emerging leaders believe it鈥檚 no longer enough to do business for the sake of business; they want to also have a positive impact on society. The premium now is on capabilities, new insights, solutions, and talent rather than age, regardless of the industry or sector.

Furthermore, youth might often be equated with an abundance of energy and ideas, but its potential extends far beyond. Therefore, being around young talent can help bring in fresh perspectives and expertise. Digital natives and entrepreneurs of startups are incorrigible risk-takers and are unafraid of failing. While they are comfortable with emerging technology and speak the language that resonates with the workforce, they are equally high on emotional quotient (EQ), have an innovative vision for the organization, and are unafraid to back it with action.

Listen to the on new-age leadership with Kulmeet Bawa:

Leading with empathy is more than “I hear you”

New-age leadership, built on engagement and innovation, can foster exceptional engagement in the workplace. Empathy is one of the key qualities that is fast coming to occupy a pride of place in the management playbook. Being able to put yourself in someone else鈥檚 shoes also reflects that the employees are heard, recognized, and appreciated.

Many might also argue that sharing personal stories should not be a part of workplace discussion. In the contrary, connecting with your employees on a human level by sharing valuable life lessons as a mentor and leader can serve as inspiration. In current times when hybrid models is the new working style, being able to forge a bond through personal stories is a great way to build trust.

Collaborative leadership is the road to the future

The world has fundamentally altered, and leaders today are more open and aware of 鈥榩eople power鈥 and this reflects in their approach to leadership as well. This is the reason why there鈥檚 no one style that is gospel anymore. New-age leadership is a permutation and combination of several traits along with the drive to innovate, adapt and develop solutions. Much like the army, where different skill sets are required to succeed, in the organization too, we need a good mix of diverse leaders – who are willing to lead with a vision.

Owing to the increasing complexity 鈥榤oonshot thinking鈥 will gain more importance. That means motivating teams to think big by framing problems as solvable and encouraging them to explore new ways to think about the future will be the approach. This can be applied to any discipline and will also increase the individual鈥檚 productivity.

To sum it up, new-age leadership is the capacity to 鈥榥ot only know the way but also go the way and show the way.鈥 听In other words, we realize the true potential of a leader in ourselves, not only by the work we do but by the work we inspire others to do. Individuals who understand this, strive to be more adaptable, learn continuously, and have an open and innovative bent of mind to create winning organizational cultures, will not just survive but thrive in this era of digital disruptions.
