Implementation lessons

Early lessons included the need to collect emissions data in a consistent manner, anchor the project in its net-zero program governance, and expand the scope of the project beyond carbon footprint data to include other environmental topics for a more holistic approach.

The next question concerned the IT architecture, organized into three layers. The top layer relates to the collection of raw sustainability, financial, and operational data from various source systems. The middle management layer processes and standardizes the data. Finally, a bottom planning and reporting layer delivers insights for sustainability decision-making.

The rollout began by uploading carbon footprint data into 麻豆原创 Sustainability Footprint Management across one company code and will increase to five company codes before the system goes live in Q3 of this year. It is useful to note the iterative approach our team has taken, which has allowed for the collection and integration of data from different sources and the testing of use cases including our听ability to support businesses amid changes such as those recently initiated by the EU鈥檚 new Omnibus package.

How High Tech Helps S.Oleum Deliver ESG Metrics You Can Trust /2023/08/high-tech-helps-s-oleum-deliver-esg-metrics/ Tue, 08 Aug 2023 12:15:25 +0000 /?p=206310 How can a three-year-old agroforestry company produce trustworthy, sustainable feedstock 鈥 raw materials for finished goods, energy, and more 鈥 while reducing the amount of carbon in the atmosphere?

鈥淲e do that by using the biodiversity of this region, the Cerrado in Brazil,鈥 Francisco de Blanco, S.Oleum co-founder and CEO, told 麻豆原创 at the company鈥檚 headquarters, an innovative farm just outside Jo茫o Pinheiro.

Why the Brazilian outback? This tropical savanna is home to the maca煤ba, a highly adaptable oil-producing tree with a penchant for scrubbing harmful CO2 from the air. Maca煤ba fruit yields advanced vegetable oils (AVOs) and high-protein food 鈥 and it can be 15 times more productive than soybeans.

鈥淲e are restoring the landscape that was deforested…Macau虂ba was native here many, many years ago,鈥 Felipe Morbi, S.Oleum co-founder and Agroforestry VP,听 said. 鈥淣ow we are bringing back these trees, and also all the other species, to restore this biodiversity.鈥

S.Oleum seeks to accomplish this scientifically, using maca煤ba and other crops in an integrated crop-livestock-forest approach, according to Morbi. The goal is to create working farms that rejuvenate degraded, low-yielding soil 鈥 and that sequester into the soil more carbon than they generate.

How S.Oleum Will Use High Tech to Get Back to Brazil鈥檚 Roots

Science-Based Approach to Reforesting the Cerrado

鈥淲e are looking for the balance of the system,鈥 Morbi said in a new . 鈥淲e will measure the amount of carbon in the soil, the moisture, the biodiversity in terms of the plants we have, and also native animals coming back to the area.鈥

Toward that end, S.Oleum is starting small, but aiming big. Most of the current crop grows on a 700-hectare, or more than 1,700-acre, pilot farm. But S.Oleum intends to plant more than 65 million additional maca煤ba trees by 2029, which would reforest 180,00 hectares 鈥 about 444,800 acres 鈥 in Brazil鈥檚 southeastern state of Minas Gerais.

Over time, maca煤ba trees also help improve the nutrient and moisture capacity of the soil, making it easier to grow other crops, according to de Blanco. And S.Oleum increases farm productivity by growing carefully chosen crops in between rows of maca煤ba trees, such as sunflowers, peanuts, and yucas.

鈥淚f you do it right, agriculture as a system is positive for the environment,鈥 de Blanco said. 鈥淧lants that were deforested a few decades ago, they are currently in a poor state because they were depleted by poor management…We believe there are better ways, and that鈥檚 what we are pursuing here.鈥

An innovative case in point: maca煤ba trees increase a biome鈥檚 carbon sequestration levels. Removing this greenhouse gas helps more than the planet; S.Oleum also generates revenue by selling carbon credits and building trust via its data.

Any Little Bit of Data

鈥淎ny little thing, any generation of data that R&D is currently developing, is extremely important,鈥 Mirelle Santos, S.Oleum Agroforestry R&D manager, said. 鈥淲e want to deploy technologies as dictated by those urgent needs.鈥

This could include remote sensing via drones that run fruit-recognition software, according to Santos. This would help S.Oleum gather and compile data quickly, without human error 鈥 and without sending workers, who must dress in personal protective equipment (PPE) to defend against snakes, mosquitos, the brutal Cerrado sun (even in winter), and dangerous maca煤ba thorns, which grow even on seedlings.

S.Oleum鈥檚 intricate business model combines agriculture, forestry, biodiversity, and carbon offsetting 鈥 and that leads to a lot of complexity. 麻豆原创 technology will be an important differentiator for this small enterprise, as well as a foundation for its future growth.

鈥淲e have a big project to run; so, a lot of people, a lot of machines, a lot of suppliers,鈥 Morbi said. 鈥淎nd we need everything in the right moment, in the right way.鈥

How to Best Manage ESG Metrics

That鈥檚 a big deal because compliant, transparent ESG metrics are crucial to S.Oleum鈥檚 success, according to de Blanco.

鈥淪omewhere around one-third of our revenues come from carbon credits,鈥 de Blanco said. 鈥淭his is our, let鈥檚 say, core business…to convert sustainability into revenues and financial results.鈥

Decarbonization Through Emission Transparency: Introducing 麻豆原创 Sustainability Data Exchange /2023/05/introducing-sap-sustainability-data-exchange/ Wed, 24 May 2023 12:01:19 +0000 /?p=204907 Companies aim to be role models in the fight against carbon emissions by making public commitments to reduce emissions. Today, more than 400 companies worldwide have signed the , committing to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

Mitigating Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol鈥檚 Scope 1 — direct emissions by an organization — and Scope 2 emissions — indirect emissions due to energy produced or used — is indeed a challenge, but not an insurmountable task. It is straightforward: we must either reduce consumption, increase energy efficiency, switch to renewable alternatives, or purchase clean energy or carbon offsets.

Tackling Scope 3 emissions not produced by the company or from the energy used is another matter.

Scope 3 emissions are challenging to manage because they fall outside an organization鈥檚 control. Collecting accurate data makes measuring and assessing these emissions difficult. And with different suppliers involved in the supply chain, there is no clarity on who exactly is accountable for reducing Scope 3 emissions. Half the problem is solved when sustainability data is standardized and shared securely.

Companies will soon be required to comply with regulations emphasizing the need to record and share sustainability data. For example, the European Union鈥檚 (CBAM) requires companies to share their suppliers鈥 carbon dioxide emission data when they import products to Europe. CBAM will enter its transitional phase as of October 2023 and will apply to importing carbon-intensive goods such as aluminum, iron, steel, cement, fertilizers, and electricity. In 2026, importers must submit information regarding the number of goods imported to the EU and the corresponding GHG emissions.

These regulations, investor, and stakeholder scrutiny, along with supply chain partner requirements, demand a uniform standard to share sustainability data. In 2021, automotive industry leaders and partners formed the to create a consistent information and data-sharing standard throughout the automotive value chain. Sustainability is one of the five major application areas defined by Catena-X. The aim is to standardize emission measurements along the value chain, document accurate carbon data, and make it comparable within the automotive industry.

The emphasis on sharing carbon footprint data along the value chain and 麻豆原创鈥檚 experience as a founding member of Catena-X led to the launch of , a new solution specifically designed to securely exchange standardized sustainability data, including product footprints, along the value chain. The solution allows companies to effectively share emissions and other data with their customers to help companies decarbonize their value chains.

Part of , 麻豆原创 Sustainability Data Exchange uses the carbon data interoperability standards established by the Partnership for Carbon Transparency (PACT) hosted by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). The solution also draws on 麻豆原创鈥檚 experience as a founding member of and . The program set the first technical specifications for the standardized exchange of carbon emissions data, allowing different emissions and accounting technology solutions to connect to and effectively share sustainability information.

While these are encouraging signs from a sustainability perspective, the primary step these companies must take to act on these commitments is to record and report on their carbon footprints, directly attributable to their operations and upstream and downstream supply chains. Understanding Scope 1, 2, and 3 carbon footprints with increased confidence helps take action to prioritize decarbonization initiatives and report improvements. The central question is no longer why, but how? A big part of the answer may come from the unlikely world of accounting. Companies need to start treating carbon like money 颅– they need a carbon accounting system that mirrors their financial accounting system.

However, carbon accounting is still done mainly using spreadsheets and semi-automated tools that use estimates and averages for carbon footprints. Only 9% of companies have a comprehensive view of their greenhouse gas emissions and their impact across the entire value chain.

This is no longer enough. We need to account for carbon with much more precision and control by using actual data values across our business operations and supply chains in sync with financial flows. Second, 麻豆原创 offers , a new application designed to securely exchange standardized sustainability data, including product footprints, along the value chain. The application allows precision accuracy by gathering actual carbon data directly from suppliers. 麻豆原创 Sustainability Data Exchange, part of , uses the carbon data interoperability standards established by the , hosted by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). Acting on Carbon Emissions Data
