Today鈥檚 complex and uncertain business environment has pushed procurement teams to take matters into their own hands. Not only are they accelerating digitalization by adopting emerging technologies like AI, they are driving it by searching for ways to change the procurement operating model.

As Always, It鈥檚 All About Innovation

Procurement officers view driving innovation as one of their function鈥檚 chief objectives. Doing so will help them navigate risks and respond to an evolving consumer environment.

When procurement is truly influential, it is proactive. Teams that understand digitalization and the technologies being acquired have more impact in this area than those that are reactive. Over two-thirds (70%) of the survey respondents agree that procurement is actively involved in developing their wider organization鈥檚 digital transformation strategy 鈥 though whether this is true in the day-to-day may vary from business to business.

If procurement is to play a more integral role in businesses, changes to the function鈥檚 operating model are likely for some organizations, which is why the research also shows that procurement is accelerating its digitalization, including through the adoption of emerging technologies. Approximately 84% of executives are confident in their procurement team鈥檚 ability to apply technology successfully to automate some processes and shift attention to more strategic and complex tasks.

This ability to seamlessly integrate and adopt new solutions will be critical as procurement teams work to balance capabilities, know-how, and expertise from suppliers to achieve the best possible results.

Digitalization Remains a Top Priority

While innovation is at the core of many companies鈥 priorities, C-suite leaders are laser-focused on the solutions that enable their teams to be more efficient, cost-effective, and risk-averse.

More than half (57%) of the C-suite cite digitalization as the top strategic priority for their procurement teams. This emphasis may be fueled by recent advances in generative AI, which is the top technology trend (34%) executives plan to implement in the next 12 to 18 months.

Digitalization efforts can offer real-time capabilities that better address dynamic market challenges and make existing procurement processes more efficient. Data-driven insights allow for more actionable outputs in strategic decision-making and can even impact procurement鈥檚 role in engaging contingent labor. Augmented with AI, they can easily manage contingent labor by streamlining and standardizing recruiting processes like job advertising, resume scanning, expediting background checks, and more.

More efficient intake management also goes hand-in-hand with digitalization. While generative AI occupies the highest priority, intake management is only one percentage point behind it, making it the second-most likely tech trend to be piloted or implemented. 

Value of Multi-Sourcing and Supplier Diversity

The top organizational risk for procurement was monetary uncertainty (49%), as macroeconomic risks can have a large impact on operational external risk. This is a potential factor as to why procurement teams are focused on risk as a longer-term priority.

Updates here can create opportunities like multi-sourcing, which can improve risk reduction and resilience amid growing external threats, and supplier diversity 鈥 driving market expansion through a more diverse supplier base. These possibilities prove how companies must make it a mission to improve the quality of data and the models needed to effectively analyze it. Subpar data directly hinders procurement鈥檚 ability to make good decisions, undermining its overall effectiveness and derailing successful digitalization before it takes hold.

Executives Agree: Time to Go All-In on AI

No other strategic priority attracts nearly as many responses as a priority across all industries as digitalization. However, respondents also agreed on one other key topic: the role that AI will take in the digitalization journey.

Adoption of an AI strategy stands at the joint top of executives鈥 list of digitalization priorities for procurement, alongside spend analytics, both cited by 44%. Almost half (48%) of executives aim to use AI to improve procurement processes through source-to-pay and AI-enabled spend management and decision support.

As the main drivers for digital transformation in procurement, these two objectives are complementary. AI tools can read a contract to evaluate clauses and suggest how they can be improved. It can also enhance data management, streamlining the processes needed to make key procurement decisions.

Fully digitalizing procurement operations has been on the function鈥檚 agenda for several years, but it is a continuous challenge. It is a process that does not have an endpoint, particularly as technologies advance quickly. The leading technologies from just three years ago pale in comparison to what can be accomplished today, which require knowledge across software development, APIs, and AI.

Therefore, success in building a thorough and adaptable AI strategy requires top-level expertise. Acquiring the necessary skills could entail considerable organizational and cultural change in procurement and across the business 鈥 extending beyond the structural shifts and developing new ways of working to build these skills.

The Start of a Procurement Renaissance

Across industries, procurement is already finding new ways to add value to the organization. But now that chief procurement officers and their teams are more consistently gaining a seat at the decision table, the challenge is to keep it.

The ongoing state of disruption offers ample opportunity for procurement teams to continue evolving and demonstrate their worth. Above all, improving collaboration with other business stakeholders will be the key to strengthening procurement鈥檚 role within the organization. Today鈥檚 technology-driven initiatives are as much a human challenge as they are a technology one, and when organizations are planning these initiatives it is clear that they need to consider people, process, and technology in equal measure to ensure success.

To carry out business processes with confidence and continuity amid uncertain market conditions 鈥 from procurement and supply chain to logistics and asset management 鈥 organizations rely on an unending stream of data amassed through the routine course of operations. A firm鈥檚 growth prospects typically correlate with its access to such data, both its own and that of its trading partners. The higher the quality of that data, the more valuable the insights it contains, particularly when analyzed by emerging AI capabilities. Of course, successful businesses have always set themselves apart by access to scarce resources. But did you know the same holds true for world-class cities as well?

Settled in 1905 as a rail link between Salt Lake City and Los Angeles, the sleepy stopover known as Las Vegas was an unlikely candidate to become a century hence. Limited in arable land, much of the region lay fallow in the early twentieth century. But with the opening in 1936 of the Hoover Dam only 50 kilometers to the southeast, a city was born and a spectacular growth story begun. The world鈥檚 largest public works project of its day, construction of the dam required 21,000 workers to excavate 4.2 million cubic meters of rock, lay 937 kilometers of pipe, and pour 3.5 million cubic meters of concrete 鈥 enough to pave a highway stretching from Lisbon to Lapland.

Completed more than two years ahead of schedule in the depths of the Great Depression, the Hoover Dam soars 221 meters over the Colorado River, irrigating 1 million hectares of farmland in California, Arizona, and Nevada. It provides drinking water for urban centers including Phoenix, Tucson, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas and produces 4 billion kilowatt-hours of sustainable hydroelectric power annually for millions of homes and businesses across the southwestern U.S.

For nearly nine decades, the Hoover Dam has served as a conduit through which water and electricity flow in abundance, giving rise to a thriving city synonymous with legendary entertainment, a resplendent skyline, and limitless opportunity. For its part, too is a conduit for exponential growth. But the precious resource it distributes is operational data, and its beneficiaries are the millions of trading partners that conduct business through its enterprise applications augmented by .

Powerful business networks, not unlike mighty hydroelectric dams, represent marvels of engineering, feats of architecture, and transformative solutions to formidable operational challenges. And the 麻豆原创 customers, partners, and industry experts in attendance were more than ready to hear what he had to say.

For the past year, Alam, president and chief product officer of 麻豆原创 Intelligent Spend and Business Network, and his team have been speaking with 麻豆原创 customers, gaining an intimate understanding of their spend management challenges and envisioning solutions to address them. This includes carefully assessing the buzz around artificial intelligence (AI) to separate what is the usual tech hype from the true promise.

Today, it is difficult to find a comprehensive view of supplier data. Information about contracts, sourcing events, and supplier evaluation scores are spread across various procurement systems and technologies. Making things worse, supplier master data is not always harmonized across disparate back-end systems, and data from legacy systems sometimes cannot be reached at all.

Our vision is to equip buyers with a single view of their supplier. This view includes:

  • Harmonized supplier master data from enterprise resource planning (ERP) using master data native integration
  • Procurement suite data, including sourcing, contracts, and spend
  • Ecosystem data from 麻豆原创 Business Network and third-party sources

Data will be delivered via a simple, experience that makes all decision-relevant information available at a glance.

Additionally, supplier data will become more available to end users at the point of their procurement action. For example, risk scores will be present in guided buying requisitioning; risk scores and supplier status information will be available for sourcing invitation, bid analysis, and awarding; and contract authors will have access to risk scores when they develop contracts. Having this information will enable end users to make smarter, more informed decisions.

As we move forward, we will not rest on past successes. Category Management: Actionable Market Intelligence and Category Insights

We plan to introduce a new SaaS procurement solution that empowers category managers and procurement professionals to make strategic category decisions for direct and indirect spending.

Our category management solution will offer intuitive scenario analysis to visualize opportunities. Sourcing and category managers can prioritize initiatives based on corporate spend data, with system-assigned recommendations and confidence levels for opportunities. Additionally, they can generate a comprehensive view of the purchasing categories to establish category goals, develop plans, and execute and monitor progress. Embedded analytics tools provide drill-down capability into categories across multiple dimensions.

The solution is planned to be available to select customers by the end of this year with expanded availability throughout 2023.

Supplier Management: Decision-Relevant Supplier Information on a Single Pane of Glass

For many organizations, supplier data can be a mess. Information about sourcing events, contract data, or supplier evaluation scores are typically spread across different systems and technologies. Making matters worse, most master data is not harmonized across systems.

As a result, data maintenance is required across multiple systems and there is a fragmented view of suppliers, which complicates making the right supply chain decisions. Our new 鈥渋nsight to action鈥 experience for 麻豆原创 Ariba Supplier Risk and 麻豆原创 Ariba Supplier Management provides visibility into your supplier base. It combines data natively from different procurement solutions, or from external sources across categories. All relevant supplier information is delivered via a simple user experience.

麻豆原创 plans to provide this capability as an initial release in early 2023, with general availability later in the year.

As 2022 draws to a close, the year looks much like 2021, with supply chain disruptions still plaguing consumers and companies, costs continuing to rise, and the added threat of recession.

What 麻豆原创 has heard from customers both last year and this year is that to address these ongoing challenges, they want to digitalize their business to have more visibility, more control, and a better user experience. Simplifying procurement is central to their improvement plans.

Industry research supports these personal anecdotes. In an Economist Impact report commissioned by 麻豆原创, “,” C-level executives talked candidly about their procurement goals and challenges.

The introduced in 麻豆原创 Central Procurement, private cloud edition, both address respondent challenges and support their goals. Here鈥檚 how I see the data lining up with .

麻豆原创 S/4HANA is no longer a prerequisite for 麻豆原创 Central Procurement.

Large enterprises often have dozens to hundreds of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. These systems are not connected, which creates difficult to access, siloed data. Moving these disparate systems to 麻豆原创 Central Procurement had required 麻豆原创 S/4HANA or RISE with 麻豆原创, but that is no longer the case. 麻豆原创 ECC customers and others can gain access to 麻豆原创 Central Procurement, private cloud edition, without first starting an 麻豆原创 S/4HANA implementation.

The flexibility offered by the private cloud edition of 麻豆原创 Central Procurement can help organizations reduce the complexity of multiple back-end systems and move toward digitalization while keeping an eye on their budget. It also enables them to continue using familiar systems without facing the disruption of migrating to a new technology.

Mass changes are possible for price conditions and custom fields in central contracts.

Large organizations can have as many as 3,000 line items that are distributed across back-end ERPs. The new feature means a user can add and update mass changes to price conditions using Microsoft Excel at item level and hierarchy level and distribute the changes across multiple backend ERPs.

This type of improved management is among the top focus areas for delivering increased value in procurement, based on survey findings. The list of focus areas includes cost savings, risk reduction, inventory management, and category management implementation/improvement. Category management also emerged as the second biggest driver of digital transformation. With every new release of 麻豆原创 Central Procurement, we aim to add features that make it easier for procurement managers and their teams to do their jobs.

Integration with 麻豆原创 Ariba simplifies RFP process allows quick ad hoc buying.

Within 麻豆原创 Central Procurement, private cloud edition, central sourcing is now integrated with 麻豆原创 Ariba solutions. Having quick access to this global business network means improved supplier discovery, faster price updates, and a simpler process for ad hoc buys. Procurement managers can bundle various demands into their requests for proposal (RFPs), source across multiple back ends, negotiate better pricing on purchase contracts, and requisition price updates through the 麻豆原创 Business Network Discovery.

The full integration addresses respondents鈥 concerns about budget constraints. The research also points out that supply chain visibility has not improved during the past two years. In 2018, 65% of procurement professionals said they lacked visibility into their supply chain and the numbers have only worsened, with 90% of organizations rating their supply chain visibility as moderate to very low. Integration to 麻豆原创 Ariba improves visibility and offers benefits across both purchasing and selling.

Customers and industry analysts are giving these three new features lots of positive feedback, but they are not the only improvements in this recent release. Find out more about the private cloud edition of 麻豆原创 Central Procurement .

Features to Look Forward to in Future Releases

麻豆原创 strives to be transparent about features that are in the pipeline. For 2023, we are excited to talk about two new features on the road map. The first is the addition of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and automation, which are among the biggest innovations being added to platforms to improve management, reduce errors, and increase productivity.

In the first quarter, our engineers plan to add a feature for intelligent recommendations that will support source to order across disconnected ERPs. This new feature will be especially valuable for companies that have different material classifications for the same product. When procuring raw materials, for example, the material group (classification) may be hardware in one system and connector in another system. In an upcoming release, AI will look at data across different ERP systems and intelligently recommend the more accurate material group. Hardware, from the previous example, would be changed to connector. These types of intelligent recommendations will be made across the disconnected ERPs. Overall, embedding AI and machine learning in the platform will open up more opportunities for automation improvements.

Unified key mapping is another improvement we look forward to releasing. This feature eases procurement management by enabling integration with third parties in heterogenous landscapes and in those that do not use 麻豆原创 solutions for ERP.

Altogether, the new features in the current release and the planned features for upcoming releases are exciting achievements for 麻豆原创. More importantly, our customers are on the winning side as they gain the visibility they need, improve user experience, and move further in their journey of digital transformation.

New Research Forecasts the State of U.S. Supply Chains in 2023 /2022/10/us-supply-chains-in-2023-new-research-forecast/ Mon, 24 Oct 2022 15:00:39 +0000 /?p=200122 DALLAS 鈥 Managing the supply chain remains a constant balancing act.]]> DALLAS 鈥 (NYSE: 麻豆原创) today announced a new survey that found senior business decision-makers expect that the unprecedented .

More than half (52%) of those surveyed think their supply chain still needs much improvement and nearly half (49%) expect current supply chain issues to last through the end of 2022. One in three says the issues will last until the end of summer 2023. Here鈥檚 why:

Global Political Unrest Is the Main Factor Causing Current Supply Chain Issues

Business leaders say their current supply chain issues primarily stem from global political unrest (58%), lack of raw materials (44%) and rising fuel and energy costs (40%). Only 31% cited inflation as a major contributor.

Looking ahead, the top three supply chain disruptions business leaders expect in 2023 are:

  • Reduced availability of raw materials in the United States (50%)
  • A slowdown in construction of new homes (44%)
  • Disruption to public transport due to lack of drivers (44%)

Cost Remains an Issue as Companies Catch Up on Lost Revenue from the Pandemic

Companies weren鈥檛 prepared for the drastic changes in consumer buying behaviors during the pandemic and felt the financial strain as a result. Around half of business leaders saw some financial impact from supply chain issues since the start of the pandemic, including:

  • A decrease in revenue (58%)
  • Necessity to take new financing measures, such as business loans (54%)
  • Inability to pay employees (50%)
  • Missed rental payments (42%)

In order to cover the extra costs of supply chain issues, more business leaders say they鈥檝e had to turn to wage or recruitment freezes (61%) and staff job cuts (50%). Only 41% have chosen to increase the price of their products or services.

How Supply Chain Issues Will Impact the 2022 Holiday Season

The 2021 holiday shopping season was anything but normal as supply chains were stretched beyond their limits. Although many companies have started to prepare, there are still questions about how this year will pan out.

Let鈥檚 start with consumers. A separate study by 麻豆原创 of 1,000 U.S.-based consumers found that nearly half (45%) say price is the top factor they weigh in purchasing decisions, and a whopping 73% say it鈥檚 a top three factor. With inflation hiking costs and a potential recession worrying consumers, it鈥檚 not surprising that 65% plan to decrease their holiday spending budget, and 54% expect inflation to impact how they shop for holiday gifts, with 39% shopping online more.

Business leaders anticipate the online shopping trend, with 73% expecting an increase in e-commerce volume this season compared to last year. To sell their own products, business leaders plan to deliver on these differentiating points:

  • Speed of delivery (64%)
  • Excellence of customer service (57%)
  • Availability of products (52%)
  • Sustainability credentials (47%)
  • Price reductions (42%)
  • Made in the U.S. (38%)

Companies Are Fortifying Supply Chains for the Future

Every organization said their supply chain needs improving to some extent, and they鈥檙e making big changes to prepare for future disruptions and to fortify their supply chains. Business leaders plan to:

  • Adopt new technology to overcome challenges (74%)
  • Implement new contingency measures (67%)
  • Prioritize U.S.-based supply chain solutions (60%)
  • Find new environmentally friendly supply chain solutions (58%)

Nearly two in three companies (64%) are moving from a 鈥渏ust in time鈥 supply chain to a 鈥渏ust in case鈥 supply chain by increasing the amount of inventory they store. In fact, 63% think the United States should adopt this approach to overcome potential supply chain crises this year.
