The Burden of Legacy Tools

For years VMware had been burdened by legacy tools that not only impacted seller productivity but also caused significant inefficiencies when it came to business operations. Reporting capabilities were limited and the company couldn鈥檛 support payouts for multiple metrics, which was problematic as the company transitioned to a model of both license and subscription sales.

In addition, introducing new plans or emphasizing specific products or geographies was highly manual, requiring significant time and effort. This impacted VMware鈥檚 ability to adapt to business needs quickly enough to remain competitive.

The Company鈥檚 Transformation Journey

VMware embarked on an initiative to modernize its incentive compensation management tools and processes, implementing .

The decision to implement 麻豆原创 Commissions at VMware was based on many factors, namely the need to improve payment accuracy, gain more sophisticated reporting capabilities, and strengthen auditing capabilities.

Leaders at VMware across HR, sales ops, finance, and IT agreed that what the company required was a system that was both flexible and scalable 鈥 one that was purpose-built to handle change and provided the kind of transparency that the company鈥檚 9,000 sellers would love.

According to Anushree Kalra, director, IT Engineering at VMware, 鈥淲e used to have more than 700 compensation plans that were very difficult to manage at scale. Our goal with the modernization project was to reduce the number of comp plans to less than 50 and make it easy to change plans or add new ones. That鈥檚 exactly what we did.鈥

The company successfully implemented 麻豆原创 Commissions in nine months, ahead of the proposed one-and-a-half-year plan, which included the switch from Oracle to 麻豆原创 HANA.

Realizing the Benefits of a Modern Tool

According to Kalra, VMware now has a streamlined incentive compensation management process complimented by a system that鈥檚 capable of accommodating various compensation plans and multiple metrics for commissions. The company now changes plans every six months and can adapt to market conditions much more quickly.

鈥淏est of all, with 麻豆原创 Commissions we have a tool that allows us to pay our sellers accurately and on time,鈥 said Kalra. 鈥淚n fact, the time required for commission calculations and the time for processing commissions for VMware has been reduced from several days to a few hours.鈥

This is due in large part to workflows and approvals that were made much easier with 麻豆原创 Commissions. Now VMware can confidently process commissions at scale even as the dynamics of its sales organization change.

The benefits of more robust reporting capabilities have also been significant. The solution helps provide personalized dashboards, allowing sellers to access the information they need 鈥 how, when, and where they want. This means VMware can load plans for sellers and instantly provide them visibility into their commissions. The company says this has helped to build trust among sellers, which has had a direct impact on satisfaction and retention.

With better operational reporting, the company is also more efficient, according to Kalra. Now, finance has what it needs for forecasting and setting quotas, for example.

The fire approached at an alarming rate and razed my house. That was my call to action. I realized the community was totally unprepared to deal with such forces of nature.鈥

Community Centered

Today, Gibson is at the forefront of firefighting activities in a subtropical place where the聽summers are typically long, hot, and humid.聽In this part of Brazil, fires have been increasing in frequency and intensity due to changes to the climate and in agricultural practices. Gibson is a member of , a volunteer organization working in alignment with the local municipal firefighting agencies to protect the聽environment聽through the聽prevention and control of forest fires.

鈥淎 lot of our work revolves around educating people about the need for an ecologically balanced environment,鈥 he explains. 鈥淲e also provide support to communities and wildlife affected by natural and environmental disasters.鈥

The Best Way To Fight Fires Is To Prevent Them

The best way to fight fires is to prevent them from breaking out in the first place. That requires round-the-clock vigilance, especially during hot, dry periods. Early detection is critical. A forest fire usually begins when grass and dry undergrowth are ignited, generating a ground fire, which is easy to control. If it grows into a wildfire, it can leap into the treetops, leading to a crown or canopy fire where the flames spread rapidly. Crown fires are considerably more difficult to control and can easily grow into a conflagration, which is practically impossible to extinguish.

Fires break out on a monthly basis even during the rainy season. There is a constant struggle for resources, manpower, and equipment. Gibson鈥檚 goal is to hire a few full-time workers because, as passionate as they may be, volunteers have day jobs and other obligations, making it difficult for them to drop everything whenever a fire breaks out.

鈥淚f we get there in the first 10 minutes, we can usually nip a fire in the bud before it spreads. After 15 or 20 minutes, it鈥檒l be impossible to control. So, early warning is critical,鈥 he says.

But it鈥檚 not just about sending people out to the fire. The group needs someone to man the phone at all hours, as more and more requests are coming in. He himself is constantly monitoring a vast territory on his laptop. Besides being passionate, volunteers must be flexible in order to respond to sudden calls. His team of four includes a yoga teacher, an artist, a carpenter, and a gardener, people who can drop the tools of their trade to dash out on a call.

The hours are long; volunteers come home tired and dirty. The day doesn鈥檛 end after the fight. 鈥淚 used to spend hours collating the data 鈥 location, territory covered, number of people involved, type of vegetation burned, resources used. Every detail needs to be recorded. In the meantime, I鈥檇 be doing my laundry and preparing my equipment for the next day,鈥 says Gibson, describing his daily tasks.

Data Based

When it comes to data, though, things have gotten better. A dedicated team at 麻豆原创 Brazil developed a geo-referencing, image recording, and real-time data platform that鈥檚 helping Brigada Carcar谩 fight forest fires, rescue bees, and plant trees in a broad reforestation program.

鈥淭he platform helped us modernize our entire service structure and enables us to generate the essential data for monitoring and analyzing occurrences in real-time,鈥 says Marcio Amorim, co-founder of the non-profit organization dedicated to protecting people, wildlife, and nature.

鈥淲e鈥檙e experiencing a completely new reality thanks to the technology. Previously, we relied totally on the manual input of data, which led to errors and was not providing the visibility needed for preventive action. We were using outdated maps. Now, we鈥檙e tracking and tracing everything using GPS coordinates on our mobile devices. We can capture images of the damage, measure the impacted territory, and identify the species and number of animals killed and wounded.鈥

Based on 麻豆原创 Business Technology Platform (麻豆原创 BTP) and , the application enables Brigada Carcar谩 to achieve three goals:

  • Prevent forest fires through improved monitoring capabilities and relevant data analysis.
  • Salvage and reestablish apiaries in partnership with Cresan, a local NGO dedicated to preserving and protecting the 130 species of native bees throughout the region.
  • Revive and replant forests impacted by fires 鈥 tasks include analysis of charred lands and tree remnants and the management of nurseries for growing native species for reforestation.

Whereas some of the analytical tasks may have taken several days to complete, now they are done in a matter of minutes.

Future Focused

Pif Paf, a leading Brazilian producer of meat and poultry, and Grupo LPJ, the 麻豆原创 implementation partner that got the application up and running, were keen to help 麻豆原创 develop the application.

At the forefront of the fight against forest fires since 2014, Brigada Carcar谩 was called out a total of 310 times since 2020, playing a prominent role in protecting the region鈥檚 natural and cultural heritage.

鈥淭hanks to the 麻豆原创 application, we are much better prepared,鈥 says Gibson. 鈥淲e鈥檙e also able to exchange data and best practices with other parts of the country and even other countries like Portugal that are suffering from extreme conditions conducive to forest fires.鈥

ITZBund and 麻豆原创 Bring AI to German Federal Agencies /2022/06/itzbund-sap-bring-ai-to-german-federal-agencies/ Mon, 06 Jun 2022 10:15:17 +0000 /?p=197128 A universal artificial intelligence (AI) platform for all federal authorities: that鈥檚 what the German Federal Center for Information Technology (ITZBund) wants to create 鈥 relying, among other things, on a scalable modular system based on and 麻豆原创 Data Intelligence. The AI platform has already gone live at one of the federal agencies.

It all began in 2015 with a cabinet decision by the German Federal Office of Administration. The IT landscape was to be consolidated and homogenized by a single IT service provider, the ITZBund.

The mission: shape the future digital transformation of the German federal government and its administration. The ITZBund operates 37,200 servers in its own data center and manages more than 100,000 end devices, consolidating disparate IT solutions across all German federal agencies.

Artificial Intelligence for the German Federal Office of Administration

The German government鈥檚 coalition agreement highlights AI鈥檚 importance in the coming years and names it one of the most disruptive technologies. The ITZBund worked with 麻豆原创 to create an AI platform on which the first AI projects can be implemented. Based on 麻豆原创 HANA and 麻豆原创 Data Intelligence, a modular and scalable AI platform was created, bringing together data provision, model development, and model application in a single solution. 鈥淔or the very first time we have now systematically introduced AI to the German Federal Office of Administration,鈥 says Holger Lehmann, management team leader in the ITZBund.

AI-supported methods can, for example, predict economic developments, analyze large volumes of data, and detect anomalies. AI capabilities can also uncover links and patterns in images and texts. There are numerous use cases in which AI aids specific federal agencies. Examples include automatic fraud detection, monitoring and controlling traffic jams, detecting storm damage in forests, and generating crisis alerts.

麻豆原创 Hit the Mark

鈥淎s the ITZBund, we do not develop basic technologies in house,鈥 explains Lehmann. 鈥淲e buy and operate marketable solutions and continually adapt them to the needs of our customers, the federal authorities. For many years we have been working intensively and productively with 麻豆原创.鈥 The project that the ITZBund and 麻豆原创 worked on got a lot of attention. The solution offered guaranteed data protection and IT security, which is of the utmost importance when selecting the right IT solution provider. 鈥淲e also deal with highly sensitive data and taxpayers鈥 money, among other things, and therefore we can鈥檛 afford any mishaps,鈥 says Lehmann. 鈥淭he technology has to be mature and meet our extremely stringent data protection requirements. Citizens need to trust that their data is always protected.鈥

AI: Platform-as-a-Service

The ITZBund and 麻豆原创 joined forces and developed an AI reference architecture to be used later by various federal authorities for different projects. The experience gained from previous projects was considered when developing the platform as a service (PaaS).

The AI platform, hosted by the ITZBund data center, enables easy access for all federal authorities. The ITZBund will also take care of maintenance and support, and it plans to offer PaaS to all federal authorities who are interested in using AI.

Modular and Scalable AI Platform

鈥淚t is important for us to create a platform that we only have to invest in once but can deploy repeatedly for our customers,鈥 says Wiebke Bedenknecht, head of Unit Software Development. 鈥淲e want to create a kind of modular system that allows us to implement different technological requirements at a very high speed.鈥 The platform supports agile development and is scalable to accommodate even more applications.

Project Timeline

Nine months after the project kicked off, the AI platform was completely functional. The first agency to go live, the German Federal Central Tax Office (BZSt), can now use AI to analyze, link, and evaluate tax data as part of its 鈥淎nswer鈥 project. With the help of clustering and natural language processing (NLP), the intelligent system detects anomalies and correlations in tax data that would otherwise be almost impossible to catch on a case-by-case basis. And another customer is already in the starting blocks: the German Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) is scheduled to connect to the AI platform and take advantage of its full range of capabilities.

Collaborating for Germany鈥檚 Digitalization

In the future, the ITZBund will continue to rely on partnerships with the private sector; the consolidation of the federal administration is not yet complete. 鈥淎s a public administration, we must have control and data sovereignty 鈥 but not do everything ourselves,鈥 says Lehmann. 鈥淚f we want digital sovereignty, we need powerful partners who will work with us in representing the interests of the German Federal Republic.鈥

From 鈥淛eopardy!鈥 to hockey to infrastructure and supply chain, the sheer volume of data created each day has endless possibilities to help improve our lives.

Nearly 10 years ago, sports fans began feasting on new types of statistics made possible by 麻豆原创 HANA, an in-memory database, which could serve up those numbers in real time. The lightning-fast technology could scale to accommodate the millions of sports fans without crashing websites disappointing them.

In more recent years, the methods for collecting data have grown to include RFID tags, sensors, and photos. Today, are collected by sensors embedded in hockey pucks that can travel more than 100 mph and on player jerseys.

鈥淲e are now able to give fans a near-real-time experience, meaning under two seconds,鈥 said Daniel Beringer, 麻豆原创 global head of technology for global sponsorships.

Even the iconic U.S. television game show 鈥淛eopardy!鈥 is using similar technology to provide game stats that track how fast contestants click their hand buzzers, according to the Wall Street Journal.

麻豆原创’s Take

But entertainment is just the tip of the data iceberg.

鈥淪ensors are being applied in pretty much every industry right now, some more and some less, and all that data has to be processed, it has to be taken care of,鈥 Beringer said.

In supply chain management, sensors can be attached to goods to produce immediate feedback on their movements. Consumers use this common technology to track their packages, but more sophisticated version can be used to track movements, manufacturing inputs and finished products.

鈥淭hat’s obviously not the same speed as a hockey puck,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ut it goes in the same direction. There you could obviously take all that data in the supply chain and try to find optimization potential or just simply statistics, measuring the whole supply chain in a much, much better way.鈥

In April 2021, data from sensors installed on a bridge in Norway alerted engineers of unusual movement from vibrations emanating from the nearly 80-year-old Stav氓 Bridge. Like so many older bridges worldwide, the concrete arch bridge was built for less than half the traffic volume and loads it now experiences. Thanks to the sensors, engineers were able to safely shut down the bridge and start repairs before a catastrophic failure occurred.

Sensors can collect and monitor data 鈥 including temperature, traffic, material and weather 鈥 that infrastructure is subjected to and additional technology can be used to analyze it and predict problems or maintenance requirements.

鈥淎ny anomalies can trigger a warning that a failure or even a catastrophic failure may be imminent,鈥 Beringer said. 鈥淚f you see it early enough, then you can better prioritize which bridge you repair or replace first and which ones have a longer lifespan.鈥

Fashion and pharmaceuticals also are using similar technology to find out what dress will sell or where drugs are being shipped. The potential uses are as endless.

鈥淚t’s like a Pandora’s box,鈥 he said. 鈥淵ou open it, and then you don’t know where you really end up.鈥

Achieving Health Goals Through Process Standardization

During the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses were concerned with maintaining operational continuity and keeping pace with demand while ensuring a safe and healthy environment for their workforce. Looking for Global Consistency

鈥淰odafone has been growing in recent years to strengthen its portfolio of services and expand into new geographies,鈥 says Ignacio Garcia, CIO of Corporate Information Systems at Vodafone Group. With more than 76% of its electric production ecofriendly, Iren established itself as a major player in upstream and downstream energy, district heating, and the water sector.

For long-lasting success as a global player, Iren strives for seamless supply chain management processes, including a frictionless invoice processing experience for its suppliers and other stakeholders. In addition, a new 2019 law in Italy introduced mandatory electronic invoicing on national level, requiring a single source of truth for invoice activities.

In times when supply chain reliability is key, the project team aimed at providing suppliers with highest transparency. To do so, the innovation team focused on the following areas:

  • Data management and consistency
  • Efficient communication for seamless invoice processing
  • Supplier relationship management with timely and transparent information flow

Exploring and Synthesizing the Needs of End Users

Following its , the Customer Innovation unit at 麻豆原创, which includes 麻豆原创 AppHaus and the Strategic Customer Engagements team, first tried to gain a deep understanding of Iren鈥檚 needs and challenges. While conducting an exploration workshop, multiple stakeholders working on Iren鈥檚 invoice processing analyzed the as-is situation and identified areas that offered opportunities for improvement. Based on the insights gained, the workshop participants identified a new communication interface with a specific focus on the invoicing processes to be the preferred solution to pursue. To get a thorough understanding of the process, the 麻豆原创 team conducted interviews with both Iren and its suppliers鈥 end users.

鈥淯sually I approach challenges in such a way that I have the solution directly in my mind,” said Alessandro Giussani, senior manager for Finance Accounting at Gruppo Iren.
“麻豆原创’s human-centered approach to innovation has taught me differently. The mindset change enabled us to analyze the problem from many different point of views, which ensured the most beneficial solution. The involvement of all relevant stakeholders from the beginning is something we will capitalize on in the future.鈥

Exploration Workshop and Thorough User Research

During the user research, the team analyzed the process that was to be improved. It covers the following steps. First, before bills are being paid, the purchase and invoice processing workflow starts with the creation of a purchase order (PO) and the issuance of an invoice from Iren鈥檚 suppliers.Iren then inspects incoming goods or performed services and validates incoming invoices.

Scenes from workshop at IrenSounds easy; however, challenges arise on a regular basis for example when POs are not assigned to the correct invoice and therefore cannot be paid. Suppliers got in touch with Iren via classic communication channels often without contacting the right Iren counterpart. The lack of transparency led to frustration on both sides.

Improving Invoice Processing with 麻豆原创 Business Technology Platform

Having the end users, different stakeholders and the process in mind, it quickly became clear that leveraging 麻豆原创 Business Technology Platform would solve the discussed challenges holistically. The platform is an integrated portfolio of solutions helping companies to connect processes and experiences. It enables enterprises to act with integrity and confidence and, ultimately, support much needed continuous business innovation.

Built on 麻豆原创 Integration Suite and the 麻豆原创 Extension Suite, a dedicated supplier portal for a transparent and easy exchange between Iren and its suppliers helps ensure a frictionless invoice-processing experience. The portal delivers a comprehensive overview of received POs and submitted invoices and their statuses. Users can gain deep insights about POs and invoices with the option to propose changes, such as change of IBAN number.

And the project team did not stop here. As the icing on the cake, a new chatbot powered by 麻豆原创 Conversational AI was developed to become an independent first-level interaction channel.

鈥淭he project conducted with 麻豆原创 delivered promising and convincing results,” confirmed Laura Molino, information systems, ERP, and HR solutions manager at Iren SpA. “This only constitutes the starting point of our journey with 麻豆原创 Business Technology Platform. Along with the PoC, we started experimenting with 麻豆原创 Analytics Cloud and are eager to leverage innovative methodologies to maximize productiveness.鈥

Bringing Purchase and Supplier Experience to a New Level

When Trains Aren鈥檛 Your Only Fast and Stable Assets

鈥淚t鈥檚 very fast, I mean blindingly fast, where we had some processes that used to take five, six hours now take minutes,鈥 said Dean Stoffel, director of Program Management for 麻豆原创 Technical Services at CP. 鈥淭he stability that gave us, and the credibility with our end customers inside of CP, helped shift perspectives of us to more of a partner than a cost. It鈥檚 been a huge impact.鈥

That鈥檚 because when a CP system is down, that outage delays the company鈥檚 trains, and longer delays cost the business more and more time and money. has helped dramatically reduce CP system downtime.

鈥淥ver the course of six years, we鈥檝e moved from about 1,200 hours down to between 15 and 60 hours on an annualized basis,鈥 Redeker said. 鈥淵ou can see the productivity improvement in the movement of trains and cost savings.鈥

System outages at CP have gone from weekly ordeals to a blip every few weeks or months, according to Redeker and Stoffel. Outages longer than 30 minutes cause problems — while outages below that half-hour threshold have virtually no impact on the business.

鈥淏efore, we could have a system down for six, eight hours. Now a 10-minute or 20-minute interval is my max downtime for a hard crash,鈥 Stoffel said. 鈥淭hat means that even if we do have a high-severity issue on one of our systems, the outage is very short.鈥

But it is operating in a hotly contested market and to continue offering competitive prices and producing paper sustainably, the company is aiming for cost efficiency through digitalization 鈥 with 麻豆原创 HANA.

At its factory near Hamburg, family-owned Steinbeis produces an annual 300,000 tons of office paper, magazine paper, and digital printing paper from recycled paper. It began the switch from using wood pulp to using 100 percent recovered paper as the raw material for its paper production back in 1976.

鈥淚t was a breakthrough innovation at the time,鈥 says Ulrich Feuersinger, managing director of Steinbeis Papier GmbH. 鈥淚n those days, paper manufacturers were focused more on obtaining low-cost raw materials than on what their environmental impact might be. Digital Transformation for Efficient IT

Today, Steinbeis is a leader in the sustainable, closed-loop manufacturing of recycled paper. As a midsize company, it faces fierce competition from larger rivals. 鈥淚n Scandinavia particularly, we鈥檙e up against competitors that source their raw materials from managed forests,鈥 Feuersinger explains. 鈥淲e have to be better and faster than them, which is why having efficient IT systems is key to our survival.鈥

Three years ago, Steinbeis began expanding its digital transformation in production across the entire company. 鈥淚ndustry 4.0@Steinbeis Paper,鈥 a project supported by avato consulting ag and 麻豆原创, is the first major step on this journey.

鈥淲e’ve been using 麻豆原创 software in all the production processes at our paper factory for 20 years now,鈥 says Dr. Michael Hunold, head of New Processes at Steinbeis. 鈥淲e鈥檝e already achieved a high degree of digitalization and automation in production. But we realized that there was a lot of data we could only analyze in retrospect. That gave us the idea of having all that data analyzed automatically in the background.鈥 This is the focus of the Industry 4.0 solution Steinbeis is implementing across the board.

鈥淥ur aim from the start was to turn information into insight in seconds,鈥 Hunold says. 鈥淲e want to transform data into knowledge and use that knowledge to reap strategic and operational benefits. 麻豆原创 HANA is the solution that鈥檚 helping us achieve that aim.鈥

In conjunction with its strategic partner for the initiative, avato, Steinbeis translated its ideas into use cases for specific applications and defined the technical set-up. 麻豆原创 HANA, with its broad functional portfolio and unique features, forms the core of the tailored solution avato delivered to Steinbeis to collect data from production, the manufacturing execution system (MES), and the 麻豆原创 ERP application and analyze it using state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms.

鈥淎vato implemented our queries in applications that capture the relevant data from 麻豆原创 HANA, prepare it, and deliver it to us as actionable insight,鈥 explains Hunold. What that means in practice is that every single second more than 25,000 sensors on the production line deliver data, which is then analyzed on the 麻豆原创 HANA platform in conjunction with data from the MES and 麻豆原创 ERP in near real time.

鈥淔rom the operational perspective, our aim is to supply paper with consistent quality features and to do so cost- and eco-efficiently,鈥 Hunold shares. 鈥淲e can only do that if our technical processes are stable at all times.鈥 For Steinbeis, this includes learning from the experience of past incidents in production.

鈥淭hanks to our fully digitalized production lines, we can monitor our processes automatically and at high speed,鈥 says Hunold. 鈥淪o we now have the technical capabilities to respond to incidents early and avoid production downtime.鈥 Incidents typically include unusual machine behavior, excessive energy or raw material consumption, and product quality issues.

鈥淥ur aim is to maximize machine availability because the information we receive in real time means that we can resolve incidents without losing precious time,鈥 he says.

Steinbeis has connected more than 25,000 sensors to its central database, 麻豆原创 HANA. The data these sensors deliver is organized and analyzed by avato鈥檚 Smart Data Framework. Combining the integrated functions in 麻豆原创 HANA for data management and analysis with powerful machine learning algorithms, the solution helps ensure that monitoring is seamless and entirely automated.

鈥溌槎乖 HANA is a super fast database 鈥 and that鈥檚 exactly what we, at Steinbeis, need,鈥 says Hunold. 鈥淲hen I run an analysis, I don鈥檛 want to have to wait hours for the results. If there are inconsistencies in product quality, for example, I need to know immediately.鈥

Steinbeis is using the new platform not just for the applications in production, but also for innovative solutions throughout the company. Together with avato consulting, it has successfully implemented use cases in purchasing, materials management, and management accounting. Others are being planned.

鈥淭hanks to 麻豆原创 HANA, we can now complete our day-to-day tasks incredibly quickly,鈥 says Torben Link, head of Purchasing at Steinbeis. 鈥淏y digitally transforming our purchasing processes, we’re profiting from new possibilities that we simply never had before. We can perform mass data analyses and get genuinely actionable insight from them.鈥

From chemicals to a magazine paper line, all the relevant data is now monitored and captured. 鈥淗aving a better overview of how much we鈥檙e spending 鈥 and where 鈥 allows us to devise new purchasing strategies,鈥 Link says. 鈥淲e can analyze how our suppliers are performing and adjust our negotiating stance accordingly, which saves us money.鈥

Sustainable Business in Times of Crisis

Having digitalized processes means that the purchasing staff at Steinbeis can work from almost anywhere 鈥 an invaluable advantage in times of crisis. According to Link, 鈥淕oing digital has made us more resilient. When a crisis hits, we can continue focusing on our standard processes without neglecting others.鈥

According to Steinbeis鈥 Managing Director Feuersinger, the circular economy is rapidly becoming a must in today鈥檚 society. 鈥淚t doesn鈥檛 just save energy and resources; it encourages people to think more carefully about how raw materials are used and consumed,鈥 he says.

His company鈥檚 raw material is recovered paper 鈥 not wood. 鈥淲e use significantly less energy and water to produce our paper than manufacturers of comparable paper made from fresh fibers. We reuse waste paper, so trees aren鈥檛 being felled directly for our products.鈥 Steinbeis also has much lower CO2 emissions than its competitors.

The company has plans for further digitalization going forward and launched a Web shop in early 2020. 鈥淲e want our communication with customers to be digital in the future, too,鈥 Feuersinger says. 鈥淒irect communication is what our customers expect, and it鈥檚 also a way for us to open up new sales channels.鈥

鈥淭he key to our strategy is this: all the data from our paper factory is now available on one technology platform rather than 鈥 as in the past 鈥 in two separate places, production and the 麻豆原创 world,鈥 Hunold explains. 鈥淥ur Industry 4.0 project and 麻豆原创 technology have given us the infrastructure we needed. We now want to use that infrastructure for any process in paper manufacturing, paper sales, and raw materials procurement. That鈥檚 the challenge we鈥檒l be tackling next.鈥

The system, called 鈥淐OVID-19 Real-Time Monitoring,鈥 allows the Moroccan Ministry of Health to have a full and up-to-date view of the number of cases across the country at any one time. It also gives a complete view of medicine stock levels in every hospital.

It was developed by ALGO, the first certified 麻豆原创 partner in Africa and an expert in creating packaged solutions using 麻豆原创 Digital Boardroom. Working for a healthcare service during a global health crisis, however, was a first.

As 麻豆原创 director at ALGO, Naoual Hammane explains, 鈥淲hen the pandemic reached Morocco, there was no digital system in place to manage COVID-19 in hospitals. All personal [patient] information and data was collected in silos with no high-level coordination, resulting in huge delays.鈥

鈥淥ur expertise lies in delivering 麻豆原创 Digital Boardroom, but we knew, with as the data source, it could be adapted to manage COVID-19 in real time, across the country,鈥 he adds.

Dr. Ahmed Rguig, director of the Centre of Epidemiology in Morocco, says, 鈥淢onitoring the system in China, we were aware that, as a country, they were managing the crisis with digital technology in place. We didn鈥檛 have a system like this; we managed in an archaic way with standard tools and systems. We were very aware that we had to put something in place that allowed us to manage the scale of the pandemic with professionalism and in real time.鈥

On March 1, just two weeks after the first case of COVID-19 was recorded, ALGO鈥檚 COVID-19 Real-Time Monitoring system was up and running to help track the virus and keep on top of medicine stocks. The dual-solution system was developed and deployed by a team of 15 consultants, all working remotely, who used video and telephone calls to get the project over the line.

鈥淲e worked around the clock,鈥 Hammane adds. 鈥淭wo teams worked in 24-hour shifts to get the project delivered. I have been managing 麻豆原创 projects for 14 years and this is the first time ever a project has been managed virtually. We used video conferencing, telephone calls, sent videos by WhatsApp; the only time I saw anybody was when I met with the health minister and the director of the Centre of Epidemiology to set the system up and train them on how to use it.鈥

How-to videos were then produced and shared with staff in hospitals across Morocco.

鈥淲e were committed to responding in a smart way,鈥 says Hammane. 鈥淏efore the system was in place, there was one lab testing and sending the results to the hospital and the Centre of Epidemiology. With this system, more labs are able to submit their tests. They鈥檙e all connected and their information can be distributed quickly. It鈥檚 much more effective.鈥

鈥淚n terms of results, we can use this experience as something to be proud of. It demonstrates that we have succeeded in this crisis,鈥 says Dr. Rguig.

It is a challenge met every day by a joint business and IT team, which makes decisions based on up-to-the-minute views at every level of the sweets giant 鈥 from executive-level demand forecasting to a shop floor machine鈥檚 throughput.

鈥淒ata really needs to be accurate, and it needs to be available in real time,鈥 Ferrara Vice President and CIO George Lesko told 麻豆原创 at the candy maker鈥檚 headquarters in downtown Chicago. 鈥 actually does all of that for us.鈥

Ferrara uses the in-memory database from 麻豆原创 to significantly reduce its reporting times, from weeks down to minutes and often from minutes to seconds. And there is no overnight batch process, King stated. Transformation happens at query time.

Ferrara鈥檚 IT can respond right away to business issues and executives, according to King. Analytics that would have taken days now happen almost instantaneously. This, in turn, helps Ferrara鈥檚 business users better respond to their customers鈥 needs.

鈥淚鈥檝e been doing this since the late 1980s [and this is] so much better than anything I鈥檝e used before,鈥 King said. 鈥淥ne thing I love about the 麻豆原创 HANA in-memory database is its total paradigm shift from what we used to do to provide analytics.鈥

In addition to accessing data, users add comments and contextual information and then save them to the database, according to King. Hunt鈥檚 team also plans to track brand health in-house via Qualtrics.

鈥淭hat鈥檒l allow us to consistently measure our brands throughout the course of the year, and then load that data directly into our so we can use that, along with other longitudinal data,鈥 Hunt said. 鈥淲e get to start doing analytics on that data and also start to build dashboards to allow us to visualize it.鈥

Ferrara has grown accustomed to using data from multiple sources to drive decision making, according to Hunt. This includes determining the best way to enter a new market, identifying unmet needs, finding market gaps, and more.

鈥淔or SweeTARTS in particular as a brand,鈥 Hunt said, 鈥渨e鈥檝e used XM to touch almost every major brand activity, from new innovation to communications.鈥

When IT Moves at the Speed of Business

鈥淪weeTARTS is a strategic brand for us, and we were able to provide information literally on day one of that acquisition,鈥 Lesko said. 鈥淭he ability to move as quickly as our business is moving is really important to us.鈥

Ferrara鈥檚 executive leadership team appreciated seeing all of their usual enterprise-wide metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) in relatively the same format, according to Lesko.

With a full program of offerings, services, and tools, 麻豆原创 intends to be a trusted partner that will be there every step of the way and support customers through their transitions. While delivering on transparency and trust, 麻豆原创 is also instilling confidence in its customers to plan their digital transformations with minimum disruption to their current business processes.

Undergoing such a vast transformation is never easy, but 麻豆原创 is working to make it as efficient and seamless as possible for each customer. Each customer鈥檚 experience is unique, so it is key to offer them the necessary flexibility and time as they undertake projects at their respective paces.

Over the last few months, 麻豆原创 has taken several steps to do that 鈥 from announcing the extension of mainstream maintenance for 麻豆原创 Business Suite 7 for two more years to following up with several updates based on customer feedback and questions around contract conversion policy and maintenance strategy for existing on-premise solution landscapes. The various phases, and what they all mean for customers, are below.

Conveying Long-Term Mainstream Maintenance Commitments

Earlier this year, 麻豆原创 announced the extension of its maintenance commitment for 麻豆原创 S/4HANA until the end of 2040. Along with this promise, 麻豆原创 will also provide mainstream maintenance for core applications of 麻豆原创 Business Suite 7 software until the end of 2027, followed by optional extended maintenance until the end of 2030.

The decision to extend 麻豆原创 Business Suite 7 stemmed from customers鈥 desire for clarity on what the future holds for their individual transformation journeys. They were not merely looking for a technical migration, but also wanted to leverage the new capabilities of 麻豆原创 S/4HANA. Therefore, we wanted to give them the time to fully consider everything to its fullest potential.

Additionally, 麻豆原创 gave further clarification regarding the 麻豆原创 S/4HANA compatibility packs, for which availability is planned until end of 2025. The company has also given more clarity on the intent to provide alternative 麻豆原创 S/4HANA capabilities by 2023.

Thus, customers can migrate the compatibility packs toward the alternatives prior to 2025. It is a best practice to start with this as soon as alternatives become available rather than wait until the last alternative is provided.

Maintaining the Foundation for Successful Transition

A successful transition to a new enterprise resource planning (ERP) system cannot take place without a solid foundation. With the 麻豆原创 NetWeaver 7.5 platform providing the architecture for enterprise application integration, and the foundation on which 麻豆原创 Business Suite 7 is based, it was integral with that of 麻豆原创 Business Suite 7. As with 麻豆原创 Business Suite 7, mainstream maintenance for 麻豆原创 NetWeaver 7.5 is prolongated until the end of 2027, followed by an optional extended maintenance phase until the end of 2030. This extended maintenance phase comes for 麻豆原创 NetWeaver 7.5 at the same price and conditions as for 麻豆原创 Business Suite 7.

The 麻豆原创 NetWeaver stack builds on the foundation of operating systems and databases. Database platforms for 麻豆原创 NetWeaver and 麻豆原创 Business Suite 7 run on database platforms of 麻豆原创, such as 麻豆原创 HANA, 麻豆原创 ASE, or 麻豆原创 MaxDB, and on platforms offered by third-party vendors. 麻豆原创 will provide platform support for its own databases and work closely with partners to qualify new valid combinations for 麻豆原创 Business Suite 7 and 麻豆原创 NetWeaver.

In addition, the product and innovation strategies for 麻豆原创 BW/4HANA are now fully aligned with 麻豆原创 S/4HANA. As with 麻豆原创 S/4HANA, 麻豆原创 BW/4HANA will be maintained until end of 2040 through a sequence of releases.

Innovating Through Transition

While the move to 麻豆原创 S/4HANA is a key element to transforming into an intelligent enterprise, it is the innovation that can be realized through this that will truly allow customers to take advantage of what this new suite can offer to their businesses and, in turn, to their customers.

In order to provide customers more time to part ways with legacy systems that have been at the core of their operations for many years, 麻豆原创 announced a change to 麻豆原创 S/4HANA product conversion and 麻豆原创 S/4HANA contract conversion policy. This change grants customers executing an 麻豆原创 S/4HANA conversion dual use rights for both 麻豆原创 Business Suite 7 and 麻豆原创 S/4HANA until completion of their transition to 麻豆原创 S/4HANA. This dual usage right was previously limited to end of 2025.

Through this, customers will be able to continue to access all the solutions and tools within 麻豆原创 Business Suite 7 as they make the move to 麻豆原创 S/4HANA and will have more time to consider how to best convert their licensed products. 麻豆原创 is not only looking to offer customers valuable time, but also wants to provide them more options to allow for a successful adoption while they continue to take advantage of their past investments. This will allow customers to unlock the potential for innovation, transforming business processes through artificial intelligence-enabled automation and next-generation tools.

The 麻豆原创 HANA Revolution /2020/03/ten-years-sap-hana-era/ Tue, 31 Mar 2020 10:05:51 +0000 /?p=169870 When 麻豆原创 first introduced the idea of the in-memory database in 2010, skeptics dismissed the idea as a “complete fantasy.”

Relational databases on premise had been the backbone of enterprise systems, and some questioned whether the in-memory approach could really work when applied enterprise-wide to a company鈥檚 data assets. At that time, relational data lakes and the cloud were mostly a dream of the future.

I was very fortunate to gather customer feedback on 麻豆原创 HANA early on. While I was working on my PhD on new applications optimized for in-memory databases at the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI), I had the opportunity to present one of the first 麻豆原创 HANA demos, a dunning app, developed at the HPI for 麻豆原创PHIRE in 2010. Just as it continues to be today, customer feedback was invaluable and helped us a lot in those early days.

Fast forward 10 years, and more than 32,000 customers are now benefiting from what has become the engine of the Intelligent Enterprise. Analysts have also consistently confirmed 麻豆原创鈥檚 database strategy: In 2019 麻豆原创 was positioned as a leader for the seventh consecutive year in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Data Management Solutions for Analytics, and most recently was rated as a leader in the Forrester Wave for Data Management for Analytics.

The “complete fantasy” of 麻豆原创 HANA turned out to be a reality that severely disrupted the database market. And with its latest innovation — — 麻豆原创 HANA has become a fully fledged cloud solution that offers all the innovative capabilities that are unique to 麻豆原创 HANA, as a cloud service.

Building Next-Generation Applications with 麻豆原创 HANA

As 麻豆原创 Supervisory Board Chairman and 麻豆原创 Co-Founder Hasso Plattner , an in-memory database paved the way to do things that had previously been considered impossible.

The core features of 麻豆原创 HANA — its ability to process both analytical and transactional workloads, remove aggregates and secondary data structures, and harness the performance of in-memory computing — led Hasso to predict not just a revolution in the database market, but in applications too.

The architecture of 麻豆原创 HANA paved the way for an entirely new approach to building solutions.

Lasting Impact

In 2012, 麻豆原创 Business Warehouse was the first 麻豆原创 product to benefit from the in-memory performance, soon followed by an 麻豆原创 HANA-optimized 麻豆原创 Business Suite at the beginning of 2013. In 2015, 麻豆原创 launched the next-generation enterprise resource planning (ERP) system 麻豆原创 S/4HANA. Specifically designed to take full advantage of the benefits offered by 麻豆原创 HANA, 麻豆原创 S/4HANA enables much faster business processes, simplified data models, and the ability to analyze transactional data in real time.

The following year, 麻豆原创 BW/4HANA was launched and since then the number of products powered by 麻豆原创 HANA has continued to grow. The database now underpins , including 麻豆原创 SuccessFactors, 麻豆原创 Customer Experience, and 麻豆原创 Ariba solutions.

Since it completed the migration to 麻豆原创 HANA, 麻豆原创 SuccessFactors solutions have been able to hit a peak of 1 billion cloud transactions per day. 麻豆原创 Customer Experience solutions can import data 65-times faster than legacy databases. 麻豆原创 HANA, with its column orientation, allows for higher data compression ratios and helps to minimize data footprints. For example, the 麻豆原创 Customer Experience team achieved compression rates of up to 10-times with 麻豆原创 Sales Cloud. By moving to 麻豆原创 HANA, the 麻豆原创 Ariba team has been able to increase its key measure of overall cloud health number by 18 points (on a 100-point absolute scale) across the board.

麻豆原创 HANA also provides a development framework to build custom data-driven applications that use, for example, predictive analytics, data anonymization, and spatial services in real time, in the cloud, and on premise. The many 麻豆原创 Innovation Award entries submitted every year by our customers and partners offer some great examples.

For instance, this year鈥檚 winner in the Technology Disruptor category: Independent Big Data consultancy and 麻豆原创 partner Clariba created an app called “act路in | football.” This mobile-enabled sports performance repository and application uses in-memory 麻豆原创 HANA technology in the cloud — . The app brings together a variety of structured and unstructured data from numerous sources, including game-day statistics, sensors, medical history records, scouting reports, and on-pitch cameras. The result is a solution that gives players, coaches, and managers real-time performance feedback that enables them to take action, maximize impact, and win on the field.

Another customer that has benefited is , one of Europe鈥檚 largest university hospitals, renowned for its leadership in healthcare and research. When the hospital decided to expand the scope of its TBase database for digital patient records to other departments, it needed a robust solution to bring together disparate databases and meet the needs of the different specialist areas, while still guaranteeing the highest standards in patient data security.

Thanks to 麻豆原创 HANA, clinicians and researchers at 颁丑补谤颈迟茅 now work on a single shared, integrated, and much faster platform. According to 颁丑补谤颈迟茅 CIO Martin Peuker, 鈥淥ur data must be easy to capture, secure, and accessible for doctors, nurses, and patients. For the first time, this is now possible on our 麻豆原创 HANA platform with our developed solution, TBase@颁丑补谤颈迟茅.鈥

For the vast majority of our customers, the data they need to access to understand their business is no longer contained within the four walls of the enterprise.   • The cloud solution must be eligible for the hybrid cloud strategy. A .
