鈥淭here鈥檚 so much data; I would say in esports, too much data,鈥 said Thom Valks, partnerships manager at Team Liquid, referring to the 1 trillion points of data his company deals with. 鈥淗ow do you figure out what the right questions are to ask? And then how do you get quick answers to those questions? That was the main problem.鈥

Founded more than two decades ago, Team Liquid has become a global powerhouse in professional gaming.

Choose Your Hero: Team Liquid Turns to 麻豆原创鈥檚 Joule to Unlock the Power of Esports Data
Video by Matt Dillman

鈥淲e鈥檙e the biggest esports organization in the world,鈥 Valks said. 鈥淕aming is a huge industry, a billion-dollar industry nowadays. And esports is at the tip of the pyramid. People come to watch with thousands in stadiums like normal sports. And we are the best team in the world at it.鈥

Before partnering with 麻豆原创, Team Liquid relied on spreadsheets and manual analysis.

鈥淲e were doing everything in Excel and manually combing through the data, which turned out to be really not doable,鈥 Valks explained. In 2018, the team began working with 麻豆原创 Business Technology Platform (麻豆原创 BTP), connecting directly to game publishers鈥 APIs for League of Legends and Dota. This allowed analysts to build dashboards and streamline data processing.

The impact was immediate: 鈥淏efore we partnered with 麻豆原创, I think we had something like four or five analysts per game. If we can off source that to a tool and focus on really important data questions, that鈥檚 way more beneficial. And I would say the last year or so with AI, it鈥檚 really taken a next step.鈥

Now, Team Liquid is taking its relationship with 麻豆原创 one step further by turning to Joule to sort through the data and make decisions even faster.

鈥淛oule has taken the data that we have in our database and you can now ask it: 鈥楩ind me the best hero to play against this team over the last six months.鈥 It will turn out an answer that actually makes sense. That’s revolutionary for us.鈥

Looking ahead, Team Liquid hopes to expand access to Joule across the organization. 鈥淚f we can get Joule to everyone, it really innovates their gameplay,鈥 Valks said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 something our competitors should be really afraid of.鈥

Esports Powerhouse Team Liquid Wins Big with 麻豆原创 Business AI聽 /2024/05/esports-powerhouse-team-liquid-wins-big-with-sap-business-ai/ Thu, 02 May 2024 06:00:00 +0000 /?p=224650 Picking the Right Champions to Win the Game

Gaming is something that keeps inspiring me. I鈥檓 amazed by the speed, accuracy, and level of concentration of professional players. It鈥檚 impressive how this industry has evolved and grown over just a couple of decades.

Team Liquid commands an imposing presence in the esports world, boasting over 160 professional players across more than 15 different games and a staggering fan base of over 10 million followers on various social media platforms. With more than 75 premier events won, Team Liquid is one of the most successful organizations in competitive gaming.

Team Liquid: Mining rich esports data to help players, managers, and teams compete and win

The game with the highest viewership and extensive fandom is League of Legends. Team Liquid successfully competes with their League of Legends team, which recently won the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS) 2024 Spring tournament.

In League of Legends, the goal is to create a strong and balanced team consisting of five characters, called “champions,” in order to outplay and outsmart the opponents during the game by being one step ahead of competition.

Teams participate in a pre-game draft process to select champions before a match. This involves banning and picking champions from a pool of 166 choices to create a strong team.

Champions are the in-game figures controlled by each player. Each champion has particular skills and areas in which they excel. Putting the champions together allows the team to play in various strategic directions to win the match.

After choosing five champions (鈥減ick鈥), each team is also allowed to remove five champions from the pool (鈥渂an鈥). Those players cannot be picked by either side. This can be utilized to remove specific parts that would otherwise counter a strategy or hinder the other team from playing their favorite style and/or composition.

Esports teams and their analysts need to prepare for the draft process, as it requires knowledge of the opponent’s favorite picks and strategies. Imagine a five-a-side dodgeball match, but before the match begins, the five players from each team draw their champions from a pool of 166 individual champions.

With bi-weekly updates to the game (鈥減atches鈥), especially affecting the champions as well as indirectly teams practicing and developing new strategies, competitive League of Legends is an ever-changing game. It creates the need to constantly adapt your draft to a new environment, to analyze both your own and the opposing team’s behavior.

Furthermore, the nature of the draft process and the varying strategies of opponents make accurate predictions difficult. Esports teams have only a week to prepare for the game and gather knowledge about the other team鈥檚 favorite champion picks, strengths, and weaknesses.

Previously, Team Liquid coaches prepared draft scenarios based on manual analysis of the opponent team鈥檚 draft behaviors and champion preferences. However, the challenge was that manual analysis is done before the draft, with the best potential pick or ban changes based on the decisions of the other team. Additionally, the sheer number of potential matches to choose from and the different strategies employed by opponent teams make manual draft prediction very difficult.

Game On: The Future of Esports Drafting with AI

麻豆原创 Helps Change the Game

What if Team Liquid could analyze in seconds the best choice for upcoming drafts, including picks and bans, while considering more than 6,000 professional esports matches from the past year? What if the analysis would also consider the impact of game patches from the publishers by taking an additional 1.6 million amateur matches into account to assess changes in the power attributes and strengths of the champions? With 麻豆原创, this is now a reality.

By using 麻豆原创 AI Core to train a generative AI model that takes data from past matches and puts them into context of the upcoming game, Team Liquid gets suggestions of the best draft picks and bans to maximize the chances to win.

The solution is built on 麻豆原创 Business Technology Platform (麻豆原创 BTP), and the data is stored in 麻豆原创 HANA Cloud to cope with the 1.6 terabyte game data from past games. The result is an intelligent draft bot training, an application that runs on 麻豆原创 BTP, visualizes the predictions, and provides Team Liquid with the current winning probability after each pick and ban.

Manual Analysis Is a Thing of the Past

With the AI draft bot, Team Liquid can train for draft situations against any professional team they face in a matter of seconds. This is achieved by incorporating multiple influencing factors based on an unprecedented number of matches. The coaches and players benefit from the opportunity to conduct what-if analyses and derive valuable knowledge from the data to simulate new strategies. This is also reflected in the time saved compared to the previous manual analysis: Team Liquid saves approximately 10,000 hours per year per year with the solutions from 麻豆原创.

Relying on 麻豆原创 BTP and 麻豆原创 HANA Cloud, 麻豆原创 Business AI provides Team Liquid with the opportunity to further improve their game by leveraging data to make more informed decisions. Here is where fun and business meet.

This is how the power of business AI is made tangible in a perfect way — not just for gamers.

Esports: Team Liquid鈥檚 Masters of Data /2023/10/esports-team-liquid-masters-of-data/ Tue, 17 Oct 2023 11:15:00 +0000 /?p=212695 This October and November, gaming fans around the globe can enjoy two of the most prestigious and exciting esports tournaments: The League of Legends World Championship 鈥 also known as Worlds 鈥 in South Korea and The International, the annual Dota 2 World Championship in Seattle, Washington.

It’s a special thrill for Team Liquid fans, as both teams 鈥 the Dota 2 and the League of Legends squad 鈥 have qualified for the championships and will compete for the title. We tapped into our connection with Team Liquid and had the exclusive opportunity to talk to two team members, Haitham 鈥淗aitham鈥 Algbory, head analyst of the League of Legends team, and Mathis 鈥淛abbz鈥 Friesel, assistant coach and analyst of the Dota team, about how they prepare the teams for the world championships and what role 麻豆原创 technology plays for the teams to perform at their top level.

About 麻豆原创 and Team Liquid

With 麻豆原创 being the official innovation partner of Team Liquid, the two companies developed a close partnership of co-innovation focused on Team Liquid鈥檚 Dota 2 and League of Legends teams. These two multiplayer online battle arena games are highly complex and data-intensive esports. Together with Team Liquid, 麻豆原创 is co-developing software to help Team Liquid analyze its performance and apply more precision in areas like match preparation, team and player performance, scouting, and others. Read more .

, head of Analytics & Data for Team Liquid鈥檚 League of Legends Team

A big part of what 麻豆原创 brings to Team Liquid is , which helps make data analysis for both League of Legends and Dota a lot easier. The database allows the analysts to focus less on gathering data and more on analyzing it. Both Jabbz and Haitham have been working in this field for a long time, and there are things that they can do now that they never could before, thanks to a tool specifically made for esports data analysis.

鈥淚 support both the general manager and the coaching staff with scouting new talent,鈥 Haitham said. 鈥淭he way I do that is by providing periodic solo queue and scrim reports and end-of-season scouting reports. When it comes to the Academy teams of the East Regions, at the same time, we just track the players that are in the scene in general and we see their improvement based off the metrics that we have set in our tools.鈥

, coach and head analyst for Team Liquid’s Dota 2 Team

On the League of Legends side, 麻豆原创 HANA Cloud is Haitham鈥檚 primary tool for scouting. But that鈥檚 not what Jabbz uses the data for. For Team Liquid Dota, the data is more match-focused.

鈥淔or us, 麻豆原创 HANA Cloud has more of a different function,鈥 Jabbz said. 鈥淲e use it mostly for performance-related things. I think the big advantage we have with the database is that we can actually import any public game that we want. Let鈥檚 say things have changed in a recent patch; we can make sure that we鈥檙e always up-to-date with how the meta is evolving. We also get to have a replay of every tournament game, so we can pick up all the information we need from any game, especially during live events. This is incredibly helpful. By having this tool available, you can quickly see how teams are adapting, how teams are thinking. I save a lot of time getting that information, whereas before I would have to open up the replays in the game and manually scroll through everything.鈥

According to Haitham, being able to use real gameplay clips to corroborate the data 鈥 and vice versa 鈥 often helps build a stronger case for whatever argument he鈥檚 trying to make. Players are more inclined to believe the data once they have a reference point, which then allows them to gain a deeper understanding of the game.

Team Liquid: Mining rich esports data to help players, managers, and teams compete and win

鈥淲ith 麻豆原创, we have a lot of good [visualization] tools,鈥 Haitham said. 鈥淲e have an entire map tool that will just visualize where the wards are and what the movement is looking like. In addition, we have 麻豆原创 Analytics Cloud that gives us an opportunity to build charts and graphs for the players. I would use videos or clips that are important to show the opponent鈥檚 style, and then I support that with the maps or graphs from the 麻豆原创 tools.鈥

For some, all these details might sound small, even insignificant. However, any coach or analyst will tell you that at the highest level of esports, the difference lies in the details. When pretty much every player is equal in skill, it鈥檚 those minor advantages that matter 鈥 which makes data analysis an important factor for success. After all, a close win is still a win. Both Haitham and Jabbz point to 鈥渢he small margins鈥 as the reasons why they love their roles as analysts.

鈥淧ersonally, I work on my own goal to help others achieve theirs at the same time,鈥 Haitham said. 鈥淪eeing how players are able to use science while playing video games, to beat opponents that they may not be able to without that kind of information鈥t just makes everything worthwhile.鈥

鈥淚 agree. I think it鈥檚 always very satisfying to give information to the guys that they wouldn鈥檛 pick up on,鈥 Jabbz added. 鈥淚 guess we鈥檙e very similar in that regard. I also enjoy helping the guys and that鈥檚 what gives me the joy in this job. I don鈥檛 necessarily have to see myself in the limelight or at the front of the stage, but I really just like seeing my friends succeed.”

Sports and the Metaverse: A Revolutionary Convergence for Inclusion /2023/04/sports-and-metaverse-revolutionary-convergence-inclusivity/ Wed, 05 Apr 2023 12:15:05 +0000 /?p=203924 Recently, when I crossed the finish line for an annual fundraiser alongside numerous physically challenged cyclists in San Diego after a grueling seven-day bike ride from San Francisco, I witnessed the power of sports as an inclusionary metaphor for life. Much like a caring community that fosters harmony, a sporting ecosystem that nurtures inclusivity can work wonders for individuals, society, and businesses.

Innovative brands have realized this.

Zwift 鈥 a massive multiplayer online cycling and running program that enables users to train, interact, and compete in a virtual world 鈥 recently embraced inclusion by adding a hand-cycling that allows physically challenged athletes to race in the metaverse alongside able-bodied athletes. And it鈥檚 not alone. Earlier last year, Degree Deodorant hosted the world’s first on the Decentraland metaverse with a 26.2-mile picturesque course along the platform鈥檚 Vegas City Sports Quarter district, which reflected a more inclusive landscape with structures such as ramps for wheelchair users.

But How Does This Help Businesses?

Research shows that inclusion strengthens social networks, reduces barriers, and increases trust to generate economic benefits. Businesses that incorporate inclusivity are more likely to make bolder and better decisions. Meanwhile, sports possess the ability to transcend linguistic, cultural, social, and, now, physical barriers. With the metaverse looming large over the foreseeable horizon, a convergence of sports and inclusivity could serve as a lighthouse for business and society 鈥 a truly mouthwatering prospect of things to come. But is there an addressable market for this to make business sense?

There are 5.07 billion active Internet users in the world today 鈥 50,000 already Web 3.0 virtual worlds and 12% of U.S. Internet users are interested in using the metaverse. Digital avatars contribute immensely to the virtual experience and are increasing becoming ubiquitous.

Per the U.S. Census Bureau, 12.8% of the U.S. population in 2019 registered as people with disabilities. The European equivalent that year was 39 million 鈥 Great Britain alone accounted for 11 million 鈥 while Asia had an estimated 135 million people with disabilities. The global fitness platform market for the disabled alone is expected to hit US$1.41 billion this year, a CAGR of 23.9%.

So, there is clearly an audience for this type of inclusivity. But why bother the metaverse with it?

Answering the Community鈥檚 Call

Digital avatars contribute immensely to the virtual experience and are increasing becoming abundant. In fact, online communities are demanding greater inclusivity. A revealed a general underrepresentation of people with disabilities and women, alongside an inaccurate representation of online identities. With 57% of Gen Z metaverse-gamers their penchant for in-game self-expression as higher than in real life, developers are taking note. Last June, Meta the launch of wheelchairs, over-the-ear hearing aids, and cochlear implants for its avatars. As the metaverse takes shape, inclusivity features prominently on the social media giant鈥檚 development agenda.

And it is just not Meta. Companies developing gaming consoles are building for inclusivity as well. From Xbox Adaptive Controllers to community-built modified controllers, features to assist those with mobility, hearing, and impaired vision are gaining prominence. Gaming companies are also modifying popular games for impaired gamers. For instance, The Last of Us II 鈥 the game from the company Naughty Dog 鈥 now has play modes for deaf, blind, and mobility-impaired gamers. Likewise, colorblind players can now enjoy the hugely popular Call of Duty: Black Ops thanks to a new mode that customizes the game鈥檚 display to create a spectrum of options to suit a player鈥檚 specific need.

Clearly, the metaverse can be a great enabler of inclusivity and open new doors.

A New Vista of Inclusion Opportunities Powered by the Metaverse

Imagine a metaverse loaded with features that welcome all to coexist in the surrounds of a safe virtual haven. Events like the marathon and my annual cycling event can become regular features in the metaverse, much like those in the real world today.

Add cutting-edge sports performance analytics from to this and challenged participants can receive a significant boost for their efforts of being recognized as competitive athletes. In fact, in the highly competitive world of Paralympics where every inch matters, teams that can get their hands on 麻豆原创 Sports One can integrate data from various sources and study consolidated insights from all the athletes on their team with real-time analytics. At the highest levels, where the gold medal is decided by seconds, even challenged athletes deserve the very best and can benefit from what cutting-edge performance analytics can offer. In the esports world today, organizations like readily use 麻豆原创 data and analytics solutions such as and to help make split second decisions and heighten their performances on the professional circuit.

With such precedents in place, the metaverse becomes a prime greenfield of opportunities and facilitates the development of an environment where inclusivity can genuinely thrive. This, coupled with gamification and play-to-earn models, can lead to the creation of an ecosystem in the metaverse that nurtures a virtual economy with limitless horizons. Brands and technology companies that are building an inclusive metaverse will enjoy numerous revenue-generating avenues and enhanced social agendas.

We are at the dawn of exciting times for sure.

The company is the sponsor and official innovation partner of Team Liquid, one of the most successful gaming teams. has recently hosted the very first tournament of its own. The event鈥檚 executive sponsor, Martin Heinig, who is head of New Ventures and Technologies at 麻豆原创 and managing director of 麻豆原创 Labs Berlin, says: 鈥淚t is the first time 麻豆原创 owned an esports event, making this experience so unique. It excites me to see how we were able to bring together students and 麻豆原创 employees to see them play against each other and contribute to their gaming success with 麻豆原创 technologies, such as in-game data analytics. I’m very proud that 麻豆原创 Labs Berlin hosted this special event.鈥

In holding its own competition, 麻豆原创 showed how it is not just part of the esport ecosystem but that it can help shape it, too. 麻豆原创 Labs Berlin is constantly looking for ways to raise its profile in the German capital鈥檚 esports scene, which is one of the biggest of its kind. Digital gaming has the potential to be a significant economic opportunity for the city.

Juergen Mueller, member of the Executive Board and chief technology officer at 麻豆原创, was at the tournament, too. He is a huge esports and gaming fan: 鈥淚t’s amazing! The arena is packed, you can sense the excitement, it鈥檚 noisy, and many people are having a lot of fun. 麻豆原创 and esports are a great match. As a technology company, we use our expertise in data analytics and innovation in esports just like in any other business area to help gamers tell the story behind their data. I鈥檓 happy to see the immense interest from our customers, partners, and students on-site.鈥

Competitors battled it out over Dota 2, the sequel to Defense of the Ancients, which aficionados abbreviate to Dota. In this game, two teams play against each other, with one side trying to take and destroy the main building, called the 鈥淎ncient,鈥 and the other side defending it. Each team has five players, and each player controls a 鈥渉ero鈥 from a bird鈥檚-eye view. The game has a pool of more than 120 heroes with different abilities.

Dota 2 has many facets and is tactically demanding. Each hero has a 鈥渢alent tree鈥: when a player reaches a particular experience level, their hero can gain extra talents. This results in thousands of possible combinations, which makes each game unique.

New Insights from 麻豆原创: How Data Can Improve Performance

At the professional level, by 麻豆原创. The data and analytics tools available to the team help ensure it is best prepared for competitions and for countering its opponents鈥 tactics. The solutions it uses are built on (麻豆原创 BTP) and include 麻豆原创 HANA Cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) functionality. Being able to analyze data in real time enables professional gamers to optimize their performance and make faster decisions during the match itself.

Just like in the business world, the players need to be able to spot which information is most relevant to them instantly if they are to gain strategic advantage from it. An esport tournament creates huge amounts of data, so 麻豆原创 realized it needed to display the data it captured in a clear and visually appealing way. 鈥淚t’s inspiring to see that 麻豆原创 technology provides value in an esports context by improving player performance through live data and insights,鈥 says Heinig.

Match data and statistics can be shared with audiences and commentators in real time, giving them greater insights into each player鈥檚 performance and helping them better understand certain decisions. At the 麻豆原创 event, matches played by the finalists demonstrated how this works. As at professional tournaments, Jonathan Liebig (nicknamed 鈥淧impmuckL鈥), one of the top observers and producers of Dota 2, ensured spectators did not miss any of the action. 麻豆原创 BTP was used to combine data from past games with live data from the finals, which Liebig could use to and player performance to the audience.
