In April 2023, the World Economic Forum, in collaboration with 麻豆原创 and Boston Consulting Group (BCG), published a new white paper 鈥 鈥 detailing the impact of climate change on Asia, and the opportunities and best practices for businesses in the region.

Following are the key takeaways from the report.

What鈥檚 Happening in Asia?

As a region, Asia represents both the biggest impact on global emissions as well as potentially bearing the most significant challenges.

Asia contributes 51% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with China, India, Japan, Indonesia, and South Korea cumulatively accounting for 43% of the overall total alone. That has enormous impact on the rest of the world. The global supply chain relies strongly on Asian economies like China, Indonesia, South Korea, Japan, and Malaysia, resulting in a significant interregional flow of embedded carbon emissions.

A by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) stated that there is a 50% chance of temporarily breaching the 1.5掳C global temperature threshold in the next five years. Developed countries like the United States and Australia have already implemented much-needed legislation to boost sustainable outcomes, while China, the world鈥檚 biggest carbon emitter, has recorded a decrease in carbon emissions in recent months. Despite these positive strides, a lot needs to be done, and it needs to be done quickly.

In Asia, existing policies and corporate responses are not proportional to the threat the region faces. Asia is home to some of the world鈥檚 fastest-growing and most diverse economies, resulting in an increasing demand for lower-cost energy. Yet it is predicted that a severe increase in global temperature of 3.2掳C would see a reduction of Asia鈥檚 GDP by 26% by 2050 鈥 the second most at risk region in the world.

Even at a 1.5 掳C temperature increase, Asia is still expected to experience yearly coastal flooding impacting 60 million people, long-term degradation to 70% of coral reefs through bleaching, around 5% lower crop yields, and 1.8 times increase in heatwaves.

How Can Asia Adapt to and Mitigate the Effects of Climate Change?

It is important that Asian countries as a unit acknowledge that the world will continue to warm even if we achieve many of our climate goals. The goal then becomes to adapt to a warmer world, while continuing to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Adaptation does not mean accepting defeat when it comes to mitigating climate change. Instead, combining adaptation and mitigation offers both the ability to better deal with future risks while driving emissions down. That means it鈥檚 critical to continue investing in energy infrastructure, decarbonizing supply chains, slowing GHG emissions, and removing existing GHGs from the atmosphere.

The drive to adapt and mitigate climate change should not be seen as a cost for businesses to bear. It is an opportunity.

There are significant new opportunities available for Asian businesses to benefit from climate action. Globally, revenues of up to USD$10.1 trillion is on offer from climate-focused business activities. Of that opportunity, Asia could realize a 43% share of total global opportunity, totaling USD$4.3 trillion from ideas like the expansion of nature-positive renewables, energy-efficient buildings, organic food and beverages, waste management, and reducing food and water loss in the value chain.

What Can Asian Corporates Do?

At a corporate level, there has been an encouraging acceleration in the number and scale of commitments and in reporting on climate action initiatives. In 2021, 3,879 companies in Asia disclosed their climate targets and emissions through the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) 鈥 a 29% increase year-on-year.

Yet there鈥檚 more to do. Only around 900 of those companies have thus far adopted science-based targets, and just 300 (8%) have net-zero targets. There is also work to be done to turn commitments into action, with only 38% of companies reporting that they are following a specific low-carbon transition plan.

Turning ambition into action requires a strategic focus and a defined short-, medium-, and long-term plan. Based on regional best practices, 麻豆原创 and BCG created a corporate climate action framework that details:

  • Immediate actions for businesses include:
    • Making climate action a CEO priority.
    • Understanding the scope and scale of climate risks and opportunities using public and proprietary data.
    • Setting measurable decarbonization targets and milestones.
    • Identifying and implementing cost-efficient solutions to tackle emissions
  • Transformative medium-term actions include:
    • Mobilizing organizational resources by embedding climate action strategies in corporate governance, committing investments, and clearly communicating activity.
    • Accelerating collaboration with upstream and downstream stakeholders such as customers, suppliers, competitors, investors, and regulators.
  • Long-term actions include:
    • Expanding existing value chains and acquiring new capabilities to reduce emissions footprints across existing value chains through new technology and digital solutions.
    • Fostering new ideas in adjacent businesses and new green markets.

Asian businesses face diverse opportunities and challenges. Hence, these solutions must be custom-made to create unique measures that meet global demands. Asian leaders must take bold measures to save their businesses and the region. Pledges and net-zero commitments made at global summits must turn into actions.

Innovate, upskill, transform, repeat 鈥 this is a continuous cycle since digital transformation permeated across businesses and into societies. The evolving business models may have pitchforked many organisations to adopt technology-led transformations in lockstep with the changes, however a more careful consideration will help to create next-level growth in the future.

First, there is no cookie-cutter approach to techcelerate business in the vibrant marketplace of Asia Pacific and Japan (APJ)

For a region that is made up of 90% SMEs and a rising number of soonicorns, next-level digitalisation looks very different from one business to another; the focus for businesses in their start-up phase varies greatly from those with multimillion-dollar revenue turnover. When discussing the digital core with customers across the region, I encourage them to take a long-term view when deciding what their top needs are, and the technologies required to support those needs to run their business better.

While it鈥檚 prudent to weigh each business investment against a set of key performance metrics, business leaders need to understand that at times, the value from technology enablement can weigh beyond traditional ROI measurement. Increasingly, especially in today鈥檚 volatile environment, the returns on investment for digitalisation are showing up in alternative forms, such as solving imminent prickly or unseen issues specific to a particular industry. Beyond looking at immediate top and bottom lines, organisations should consider what business agility and future-readiness look like for their unique operations, and how to utilise technology to accelerate that.

Not only does a cooker-cutter approach fall short in keeping pace with the change for modern businesses, but it is also a stumbling block when IT has to custom-code a new capability for every new business request. This creates complex coding, interoperability issues, and hinders transformation to the cloud. That is why businesses should adopt a clean core policy and leverage extensible cloud-based platforms such as to create an environment that ensures long-term scalability. Solution bundles such as that offers customers business-transformation-as-a-service, can further smoothen the migration to the cloud and help avoid costly system upgrades.

You don鈥檛 have to be a big company to have a big vision

It is not about how big an organisation is or how it鈥檚 implementing a particular vendor solution or technology stack, it鈥檚 about the vision of turning data into actionable business intelligence. Intelligence and adaptation go hand in glove to build future-readiness 鈥 leveraging relevant data to gain knowledge and anticipate problems, and in turn using the knowledge to continually adapt to new situations and make informed decisions.

The pandemic and geopolitical disruptions have triggered a sea change in attitudes towards technology鈥檚 transformative power for businesses of all sizes 鈥 an important step towards creating . 麻豆原创 is helping our customers become intelligent, sustainable enterprises by employing tools to understand what鈥檚 happening across your business and why, infuse AI and machine learning to make better decisions, embed sustainable practices into business strategy and operations, and build flexible value chains with leading-edge industry practices. SMEs have an advantage with generally less-complex business models, more agile decision-making, and more compact teams 鈥 to leapfrog larger enterprises at that.

Identify your business North Stars

To realise that 鈥渘ext level鈥 vision, enterprises must recalibrate for long-term business resilience. For fast-growing SMEs, the opportunities to create a competitive edge could be multifarious. From enhancing process efficiency and productivity, meeting rapidly changing customer needs, evaluating new business models, improving partner and employee experience, managing environmental impact, to adapting to geopolitical volatility 鈥 the list can go on. With an ever-growing business wish list, provides a strategic charter that takes your business to the next level. During the pandemic, we saw enterprises stepping up on flexibility to keep business as usual. Now, we want organisations to double down on agility to build future-readiness for the next decade.

Intelligent automation and cloud-enabled tech services have never been discussed so heavily since the dawn of the Internet. Across industries, businesses are recognising these technologies as a green beacon of transformation to optimise customer experience, improve profitability, and engage their workforce in new ways. Once you have identified your north stars, 麻豆原创 can help to analyse your plans and timelines, review the emerging business model, and provide industry advisory to draw up your implementation roadmap. Through , we help customers define what success looks like and recommend the right technology capabilities to make that happen.

Leverage technology to achieve your ambitions

Regardless of where your company is on your digital transformation journey, every business has its 鈥渘ext level鈥 digitalisation. From business networks and supply chain optimisation, intelligent spend management, to sustainability management, you can bring together business areas and solutions to scale fast and achieve lasting success. Critical to that is an extensible digital core and the interoperability to stitch together different sources that enable new innovations. 麻豆原创鈥檚 have supported our customers in their growth ambitions, sweating existing investments and helping them evolve at every stage of the transformation journey.

Learning from best practices is a good start. What鈥檚 more critical is identifying the competitive edge that would define your future-ready, sustainable enterprise and allow technology to do the rest.

TOKYO 鈥 SENSYN ROBOTICS, a provider of services and products using autonomous industrial drones, cameras, and smart devices, today launched , an integrated platform designed to automate large-scale plant maintenance operations at oil, gas, and power plants around the world.

SENSYN ROBOTICS is the first 麻豆原创 partner in Japan to develop a solution for 麻豆原创鈥檚 industry cloud portfolio, which delivers specialized applications designed to address specific industry needs. Built on the open 麻豆原创 Business Technology Platform, these solutions help customers rapidly adopt innovations as part of their technology landscape. SENSYN CORE is available now on , the online marketplace for 麻豆原创 and partner offerings.

鈥淓merging technologies give utilities and energy companies the potential to be safer, and more efficient,鈥 said Takuya Kitamura, CEO of SENSYN ROBOTICS. 鈥淲e aim to enable reliable inspections of plant facilities through the use of digital platforms and robotics, leveraging big data and analytics to recognize and address anomalies faster, ultimately driving greater reliability and boosting productivity.鈥

In 2021, 麻豆原创 partner SENSYN ROBOTICS was selected to participate in the 麻豆原创.iO Foundry Tokyo, 麻豆原创’s start-up accelerator program. This inspired a collaboration with 麻豆原创 to create SENSYN CORE, a solution that supports the maintenance operation of large-scale plants owned by oil, chemical, materials, gas, and power companies by integrating 麻豆原创’s facility maintenance solution, 麻豆原创 Asset Intelligence Network, which runs on the 麻豆原创 Business Technology Platform.

Using the SENSYN CORE platform and application services, 麻豆原创 Asset Intelligence Network retrieves stored building and facility information, selects the plant facilities to be inspected, and links that information to SENSYN CORE. Drone flight routes are then generated by SENSYN CORE using those insights, allowing the drone to autonomously start the inspection and collect data such as photographs of plant facilities. SENSYN CORE can detect anomalies or warning signs using the data collected, and adds commentary based on the nature of the detected issue. The results are linked to 麻豆原创’s asset management solution, and flagged to relevant personnel, who can then act as needed.

The solution also offers benefits for sustainability and environmental health and safety through increased use of automated maintenance rather than manned support, as well as reducing the number of trips and mitigating human error on plant facilities.

鈥溌槎乖 partners are a vital component of the industry cloud initiative,鈥 said Kai Finck, 麻豆原创 Global Senior Vice President and Head of Cloud Industry Program. 鈥淲ith open APIs, process and data models, as well as a wealth of cloud native technologies to innovate at the vertical edge, 麻豆原创鈥檚 industry cloud is attracting partners like SENSYN ROBOTICS, who are looking to create 鈥渘ext business practices鈥 for enterprises and business networks that will help accelerate the pace at which customers can address shifting business demands.鈥

TOKYO and SINGAPORE听鈥 At the 麻豆原创 Sapphire conference in Tokyo today, and 麻豆原创 Asia Pacific and Japan (APJ) announced a new co-innovation solution to improve supply chain insurance management. The solution, Connected Product, is a packaged offering jointly developed by global digital business and IT services leader, NTT DATA, and , furthering the strategic alliance formed in 2020 between parent company NTT, and 麻豆原创 SE.

Global value chains are becoming increasingly complex due to rising geopolitical risk, trade growth, and volatility of material availability. Losses due to poor transportation conditions have become a multibillion-dollar problem due to extreme difficulty in identifying the cause of damage or when an incident occurred. These challenges offer a great opportunity to overhaul the overall value chain with a solution that can provide real-time information on transport operations 鈥 from changes in temperature and humidity to whether the goods have been tilted 鈥 to all parties involved, giving everyone the ability to quickly adapt to potential incidents and rapidly recover from them.

The Connected Product solution responds to this need by monitoring the location and environmental conditions of goods in transit. It is especially useful for tracking fragile goods, such as solar panels; bulk liquids, such as wine and olive oil; and sensitive cold chain shipments, such as cheese, pharmaceuticals, and even vaccines. The tracking provides greater visibility across the entire supply chain, and agility to activate immediate reactionary procedures, in case of damage or delays. This reduces friction when purchasing insurance and processing claims for shipments, and ensures timely delivery of goods. It also reduces waste and promotes sustainability.

Connected Product brings together the power of * and the global track and trace option, extended with NTT DATA smart insurance policy management assets**, to dramatically change the way people ship goods and manage associated risks. The solution also includes components built using .*** By enabling end-to-end, real-time monitoring of the transportation conditions, the solution can monitor all variables that could affect a shipment, and automatically trigger and execute insurance policies if goods are not transported under certain pre-defined conditions. Utilising 麻豆原创 Business Network for Logistics helps improve accountability for each stakeholder and makes transport insurance management easier. Plus, by digitising shipment and insurance documentation, the solution simplifies tracking and insurance processes across the supply chain, reducing waste and costs, and benefiting the whole ecosystem 鈥 from the insurance company to the insurance reseller to the logistics companies.

鈥淕lobal disruptions have caused today鈥檚 value chains to be more complex and diversified than ever before, and this complexity will only increase. What we鈥檙e announcing today improves supply chain visibility for logistics companies and insurers here in the APJ region, and delivers on NTT and 麻豆原创鈥檚 shared vision of helping companies around the globe achieve greater resiliency and agility to ensure they are prepared for future disruptions,鈥 said Paul Marriott, President, 麻豆原创 APJ.

鈥淎t the 麻豆原创 Sapphire conference in Tokyo today, modernising supply chain management is one of the key themes that we鈥檒l be discussing. I鈥檓 excited to see the innovations 麻豆原创 is driving together with NTT around this area, and what more we can offer to help our customers,鈥 said Hirofumi Suzuki, President and Representative Director, 麻豆原创 Japan.

鈥淭oday, more than ever before, global logistics need to be resilient and adaptative. Long-term planning alone is no longer sufficient, and organisations must be able to react quickly especially in times of uncertainty. Critical to enabling this type of agility is to have the right data in the right hands, in real time,鈥 said Norbert Rotter, SVP, NTT DATA Corporation, and CEO, NTT DATA Business Solutions.

Currently, NTT DATA and 麻豆原创 Connected Product teams in Japan, Germany and Spain are collaborating on a pilot with a Spanish logistics group and a German insurance company, using Connected Product to track the condition of hundreds of containers moved by 20 shippers between Europe and Asia. The data gathered by IoT sensors helps to ensure that conditions critical for the goods 鈥 like temperature, luminosity, or shock-proofing requirements 鈥 are managed during the journey. That information gives customers the opportunity to quickly react to incidents. The pilot project will continue to run through September 2022, after which NTT DATA plans to incorporate the system into business operations, extending the solution to more international insurance and logistics companies.
