Organizations are now moving to investing and setting up infrastructures to provide a superior work experience to their people\u2013 Hybrid 2.0. 麻豆原创 organized the 麻豆原创 HR Connect 2021 to throw some much-needed light on how we can design employee experiences for the hybrid 2.0 world that are holistic, progressive, agile, technology-driven, and most importantly, more human!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To get a CEO\u2019s perspective on the evolving paradigm of the talent agenda the event held an exclusive CEO Dialogue. <\/span>Chaired by Ester Martinez, CEO & Editor – in – Chief, People Matters, this esteemed panel included thought leaders from leading organizations –\u00a0Kulmeet\u00a0Bawa, President & Managing Director, 麻豆原创 Indian Subcontinent,\u00a0Dilip\u00a0Shanghvi, Managing Director, Sun Pharma, and C. P.\u00a0Gurnani, CEO, Tech Mahindra.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While discussing the COVID situation, the power-packed panel revisited the talent transformation agenda and reflected on how it has once again become the center of board room concern. They acknowledged the role of technology in helping businesses reinvent themselves to continuously realize value\u00a0as they\u00a0inch from recovery to growth.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Following are the key\u00a0highlights of this insightful discussion:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Revisiting\u00a0The\u00a0Talent\u00a0Agenda\u00a0Through\u00a0The\u00a0Pandemic\u00a0Lens<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kicking off the discussion with his thoughts on COVID, C.P.\u00a0Gurnani\u00a0termed it the accelerator for one of the greatest workforce transformations of our lifetimes.\u00a0Emphasizing\u00a0the\u00a0lasting impact of recent\u00a0changes to the ways we work, exercise, shop, learn, communicate, or where we work, he stated\u00a0\u201cHR\u00a0today means how it affects me as an individual and my 13,000 associates.\u00a0\u201c<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Reflecting on the\u00a0initial phase of the lockdown, he mentioned “The first few months were about arranging chairs, tables, renting out hotels near workplaces and creating a secure environment.\u00a0It\u00a0was\u00a0like\u00a0mechanically responding to an emergency\u00a0\u2013\u00a0creating war rooms to provide essentials.\u00a0But very soon we realized that transformation is essential as much for\u00a0customers, for managers\u00a0to manage a remote workforce, and as much for the workforce to balance their personal & business lives.\u00a0Technology has provided the fabric and the\u00a0answer, but\u00a0knowing what the challenges are and being able to address them is the need of the hour.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kulmeet\u00a0shared, \u201cThe world has\u00a0changed\u00a0and we are grappling with certain issues. While we miss the coffee corners, office huddles, personal connections, and travel, we\u00a0have\u00a0witnessed\u00a0a prominent\u00a0silver lining in the form of much higher levels of productivity\u00a0and a lot more time with our customers and teams, which is phenomenal to me.”\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Kulmeet<\/span><\/p>\n

Commenting with his perspective of the future of talent agenda, he added\u00a0\u201cThere\u00a0has been a clear emergence of a\u00a0brand-new\u00a0culture, that demands a\u00a0lot more agility and nimbleness. From a talent perspective, this means employees need to possess a lot more digital dexterity and mental resilience.\u00a0We as leaders & HR as an organization will need to be a lot more conscious of how we bring in this new talent and hone them to be successful. Secondly,\u00a0the changes we are\u00a0seeing today require a whole new paradigm in terms of leadership. We need to break away from the traditional hierarchical chain-of-command model\u00a0to cater\u00a0to the huge millennial and Gen Z workforce\u00a0that we are bringing on board\u00a0and balance their need for instant gratification.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking on the challenges faced by employees,\u00a0Dilip\u00a0Sanghvi added, \u201cAnother important challenge we faced was – because we have people working across different time zones, the boundaries between personal and professional time were blurry. We had to set clear expectations, otherwise, people are left with no time to work, guide recharge or relax.”\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Creating\u00a0Positive\u00a0Employee\u00a0Experiences\u00a0That\u00a0Enable\u00a0Productivity\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The more employers focus on what\u2019s best for their people, the greater each employee\u2019s experience<\/a> will be. This means actively catering to your people\u2019s needs and, more importantly, actually caring for them.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On 麻豆原创\u2019s and his personal experience\u00a0as an \u201con-screen leader\u201d\u00a0over the last 13 months,\u00a0Kulmeet\u00a0said,\u00a0\u201cEmployees\u00a0today truly trust organizations that care for them.\u00a0At\u00a0麻豆原创 our topmost priority has\u00a0always\u00a0been the health and safety of our employees and the broader community.\u00a0I am touched by the spirit today, where I see every 麻豆原创 India employee\u00a0is\u00a0going beyond their charter by miles to deliver on the shared vision that we set up for ourselves as teams.\u00a0\u201c\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Commenting on the need to create moments of truth that holistically support employees, C.P.\u00a0Gurnani\u00a0added, \u201cThis war has been imposed on us and has meant that\u00a0we\u00a0need to get into a wartime General mode. But you can\u2019t be a\u00a0General who\u00a0is not concerned about an employee’s spiritual, emotional, physical, and mental health.\u00a0Today more than ever, the future of work is the future of worker well-being.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\"CP<\/p>\n

In an effort to help employees manage the stresses of\u00a0work-life integration,\u00a0Tech Mahindra\u00a0has\u00a0appointed \u201cWellness Officers\u201d. Clearly communicating the company\u2019s intention address its people\u2019s emotional and physical requirements.\u00a0He added,\u00a0\u201cCOVID\u00a0has been a method of redefining business. My business is executed by people, they are my flag bearers and if I\u00a0can help them to redefine themselves, I will automatically be redefining my business and winning the hearts of my customers.\u00a0\u201c<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Echoing the sentiment across the panel,\u00a0Dilip\u00a0said, \u201cThe last few quarters have been some of our best. This is the result of the significant contributions of our employees\u00a0and\u00a0helps us to look at business very differently, and\u00a0learn continuously.”\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Role of Technology\u00a0as a Strategic Enabler\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Technology is rewriting the rules. In the hybrid workplace<\/a>, it\u00a0is no longer playing a supporting role.\u00a0Instead,\u00a0it has proven itself to be the\u00a0critical\u00a0driving force enabling employees to achieve\u00a0overall operational\u00a0success.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On technology\u2019s increasingly important role,\u00a0Dilip\u00a0Sanghvi\u00a0said,\u00a0\u201cThe\u00a0greatest contribution\u00a0of technology in improving processes has been its ability to remove subjectivity from evaluating performances. Making it a transparent process\u00a0that rewards people based on their contributions and success in an unbiased manner.\u00a0The speed with which technology has enabled us to work in this changing environment is only going to accelerate.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Reflecting on\u00a0its critical role\u00a0in underpinning the talent strategic changes seen in the past year, C.P.\u00a0Gurnani\u00a0pointed out,\u00a0\u201cThe shift towards digitalization has been accelerated by a minimum of 5 -7 years.\u00a0I\u2019m convinced that if\u00a0employees\u00a0had\u00a0not\u00a0embraced technology the way they did, some of the results we are seeing would never have been possible.\u00a0It is employees that grew, learned, and used the tools that were made available.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs employers and company leaders\u00a0we\u00a0will have to continue to invest in our people\u00a0and\u00a0give them a learning environment, where they can\u00a0create a\u00a0significant\u00a0impact\u00a0not only in the short-term but also in the medium and long-term.”\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Talking about the emergence of a new mindset and its importance in the experience era<\/a>,\u00a0Kulmeet\u00a0added, \u201cWhile we talk about digital-first, I have witnessed that the digital-only strategy is coming up rather quickly. The questions we get asked today are no longer about the \u201cWhy\u201d, but about the \u201cHow?\u201d – How do we do this faster? Or holistically? How do we do this cloud-first so that we are more agile?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the \u201cexperience era\u201d of ubiquitous, personalized experiences in the online world, technology is facilitating a real-time merger between science and art, between content and data. Commenting on\u00a0the need\u00a0for a renewed focus on fostering human connection, he explained,\u00a0\u201cWhile\u00a0most leadership tenets remain the same, some like the need for communication, enhanced need for empathy, and authenticity from leaders has gone up from a technology standpoint. We must humanize ourselves through various technological channels and forge the kind of bonds that\u00a0help us grow closer as people.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fostering Human Connections\u00a0in\u00a0a Changing\u00a0Workplace<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“We need to nurture a culture of trust within our organizations, by rolling out trust-based models. At 麻豆原创, we are in the process of implementing an initiative called “Pledge2Flex”.\u00a0 We hope it will help us dive deep into a flexible workplace model, agnostic of geographic boundaries and time zones.\u00a0It is time we ensure that the amount of flexibility should move at the same pace as what the world is demanding.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Discussing the needs of a changing workforce,\u00a0Dilip\u00a0mentioned, \u201cManaging the new millennials needs a new mindset. A transparent model that gives them freedom, respects their abilities, trusts their judgments while rewarding contributions, and gives honest feedback can be the best way\u00a0into the future of work.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Concluding the session with some advice on\u00a0creating\u00a0a high-performing workplace, C.P.\u00a0Gurnani\u00a0suggested, \u201cManagers need to adopt a parental style of leadership, where you understand your employee will need some help to uphold values, his\/her contributions and his\/her relationship to their own family. I believe it is our job to keep the workplace happy and\u00a0I can only do this by communicating and listening.\u00a0All my advice\u00a0boils down to 3 words \u2013 Listen. Understand. Act.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
