My first job was as the gymnastics coach. Your first job sticks with you, or at least mine did. It teaches you life lessons like time management, commitment, worth ethic, and money management.

What was your first job? Did you deliver? Newspapers? Babysit? mow lawns? Or work at the shops?

While I remember the smiling faces of the kids I got to work with, I also remember the frustration. Filling out a paper timesheet so I got paid on time, reviewing my schedule on a whiteboard, and picking up a physical check. These paper-based tasks led to inefficiencies, and I knew there must be a better way.

Bringing us back to 2021, we鈥檝e certainly come a long way. Hopefully, your timesheets are automated, your scheduling is digitised, and – do checks even exist in Australia anymore? Our smartphones, watches, voice assistants, computers, and myriad of devices ensure that our daily lives and movements are tracked. Recommendations for being more efficient are made at each moment. We鈥檙e now able to operate at a different pace.

With these advancements in technology, the ways that we work have evolved, and in a lot of ways, we could say that the future of work is already here. We鈥檙e humans and we’re constantly looking at what’s going to happen next, and that’s where the future of work truly comes in.

At 麻豆原创, we know that the way you work is constantly changing which is why we鈥檙e consistently looking at what the future of work means. Laptops outsold desktops for the first time in 2005, in 2015 麻豆原创 launched , and in 2020 virtual conferencing finally became more popular than traveling.

But as we shift beyond the now 鈥 what does our future hold?

First, we see people and computers working together with human computer augmentation. We’re putting resources into your hands for how to make better, smarter, faster decisions. No longer do you have to wait days for the reports that you need to find out the information about how your business is running.

The information you need to make real-time decisions for your business and keep you moving at scale is ready now. And nothing was more evident than when we had to transition an entire organisation from working in offices to working at home. Your teams are now made up of two things human intelligence and . These AI-Powered Superteams allow everyone to take the best role possible.

Transforming How We Work

Next, we see a transformation in where we work and whom we work for. People resources continue to be scarce, and we see a drive away from the traditional 9 to 5. The shift towards project-based hiring requires new approaches. We need to shift from billing for people in seats to delivering on organisational outcomes. Similarly, in COVID-19 we saw a massive flight out of cities. People are looking for business to move with them. This opens opportunities to connect people beyond geographies. This Jobful Future creates a collaborative structure where each contributor is equally valued, and each person feels deeply connected to solving the problem brought about.

Traditionally, we talk about diversity as having different genders, country of origin, age or identity. This leads to counting up differences, now our goal is to create work environments so people can Inclusively Belong. Beyond a simple checklist, inclusivity means we are acting to learn from the experiences that our differences harness.

In 2020 surveyed a cross sectional group of people and found that 1 in 5 identify as 鈥淎 Passionate鈥. care not only about what businesses are providing but how they provide it. Across all topic areas, The Passionates require businesses to take meaningful action, and they are vocal about the change they want to see. As these groups enter boardrooms, they mandate social action, and businesses that don鈥檛 anticipate this change will be left behind. Inclusivity is paramount for any organisation in the future.

Finally, the biggest change we will feel in the shortest amount of time is how we react to recovering the 114 million jobs lost during the COVID-19 pandemic. These are some of the most conservative numbers for what 2020 looked like. For so many people this disruption was pervasive, many of these roles will revive like hospitality, entertainment, and transportation.

But in other industries will build back digital. The jobs that exist in the years to follow COVID-19 are ripe to be dramatically different than what we see today. There are new roles for people to connect networks, become the manager of our AI teammates, move outside a major city, and bridge the gap between a physical and digital world.

Organisations need to prepare to upskill staff, support new types of workers, create different ways of connecting to work, and realise the power of AI to adapt to the Future of Work.

This past week I joined TikTok, a place most people born in the 20th century regard as confusing. This spot was not created by us and at times you might feel like a trespasser there. And while mostly this place is formed by Gen Z & Alpha Gen (my niece said, 鈥測es, auntie I followed you, now you have one follower鈥) one thing really stood out to me.

The TikTok algorithm creates a natural sense of belonging. You don鈥檛 follow people or topics the same way you do on Instagram, Twitter, MySpace or Facebook. Instead, you react and engage with content and the algorithm better learns what you like. You can follow specific people, of course, but this in some ways feels like a more natural way to find what you are truly passionate about.

Over the past year, 麻豆原创 began research across North America to understand the future of people. Through this research, they identified a group called . This group extends across generations, however appears in higher concentration among Millennials and Gen Z. 鈥淭he Passionates鈥 personal values drive decisions about where they live, work, and play.

Today, this group makes up 20% of the general population with trends showing they are likely to dominate over time.

Making them an increasingly influential demographic. In place of the seven traditional Ps of Marketing, 鈥淭he Passionates鈥 buy from companies with leaders that align with their positions (64% to 51%), are authentic (75% to 62%), and empathetic (71% to 53%). They work for companies that are ethical and committed to more than just making a profit. 82% of Passionates say they value organisational transparency compared to 78% of everyone else.

You might assume focus on change without tangible results might lead to a sense of hopelessness, yet Passionates proved this hypothesis wrong. The Passionates are incredibly optimistic about the outcome, leaving them with drive and resilience.

The Passionates are driving corporate change. We see organisations rolling out programs to reduce carbon emissions, eliminate plastic, embrace diversity, and commit addressable spend to social enterprises. Passionates reward this behaviour and continue to push further. In the three-part mini-series , Baratunde Thurston lays out three key areas where massive change is already occurring 鈥 Sports, Fashion and Food.

During my short-lived adventure into TikTok land I found myself diving deeply into different perspectives for TikTokers that were very much unlike me. I wanted to empathise with as many people as I could and gave out those likes with each 60 second story.

The most surprising part for me is that I鈥檓 in the minority of people that jump into things this way. Only about 20% of people have this level of passion for a wide variety of topics 鈥 we鈥檙e ready to change the world. Are you ready to help us?

2020 started off with a blast, we are only barely through the first quarter and it already feels like 3 years have passed us by. The world is together in a common goal to ensure we can save lives of millions. Creative Thinkers have been put to the test.

How might we live our lives, do our jobs, find happiness and joy, in the midst of absolute chaos?

We have completely rethought many things about our society. We have seen teachers adapt their curriculum to deliver online to students, artists create incredible concerts in their living rooms, and weddings using ZOOM weddings. Right now is not normal, but our ability to innovate despite the circumstances is absolutely beautiful.

This is Human Resilience.

In the midst of uncertainty, we are finding new ways to create remarkable experiences and innovations. I have found a remote incredibly different and similar to in-person at the same time. I have been encouraged over the past two days for how our teams are adapting to this remote style while exploring the problem spaces.

An initiative at 麻豆原创 that has employees becoming intrapreneurs to build ventures that will impact the world. Rather than working in our planned in-person style sessions, participants have jumped into a remote working environment.

With remote experiences we still need to: develop empathy for others and the problems they are facing, create strong inclusive communities, build a shared vision and language, allow for wild and crazy thinking for solving problems, and deliver with a just start spirit. The techniques I use might differ from an in-person experience to a remote version, but these core principals remain constant.

Inclusive Communities: Breaking down barriers with physical distance is often a challenge. I encourage people to switch on cameras at the start of the session. This video allows participants to see each other and give a face to an idea that is shared.

Empathy for Others: There鈥檚 an abundance of empathy throughout this crisis. We are creating a deep understanding of others needs and the challenges they are facing. For your challenges, this could be done by sharing pictures of home 鈥渙ffices鈥, doing over the phone, and watching target personas navigate through a tool with screen-sharing.

Wild and Crazy Thinking: Encourage people to step into a new environment using a virtual background. For example, they鈥檙e living in outer space and need to solve the problem with limited resources, or they are on stage and need to present a proposal like a world leader. During silent brainstorming sessions, play background music to give people the opportunity to think without an awkward silence.

Shared Vision and Language: Visual thinking is paramount when working in-person and remotely to getting teams unstuck in their traditional mindset and allow them to understand each other. Using virtual collaboration tools, like MURAL, give each participant the opportunity to share their perspective, then together the teams can prioritise and vote on ideas.

Just Start Spirit: With change all around us, we need to create clear focus and direction. It is crucial when working in this virtual environment that meetings end with actionable next steps. Using a tool like 鈥淲ho / Do鈥 allows teams to define the stakeholders and actions needed to continue moving forward.

These are some of the ways I have successfully shifted our traditional in-person workshops to being highly productive remote sessions. As the world continues to innovate in the distant-working environment, I look forward to trying new things that help my colleagues and customers challenge their traditional approach.
