This record number of delegates for an online event of this nature, represent a cross-section of more than 8 000 companies. This year the festival had a core focus on sustainability and green ICT, with these underlying themes speaking to the global need to secure the planet\u2019s future, and not just the future of its inhabitants.<\/p>\n<p>The festival\u2019s virtual platform also hosted an incredible uptake of engagement among delegates to this premier, Africa-focused Tech event, with more than 14\u00a0000 messages being exchanged on the platform between its global participants.\u00a0 Networking is a key component of both the live event, which usually takes place in Cape Town, as well as the virtual version. Networking is key to finding sustainable business solutions for the developing continent.<\/p>\n<p>More than 153 countries were represented at this year\u2019s event, which sees 98% of countries on the African continent also in attendance.<\/p>\n<p>Day One\u2019s agenda was centred around Green ICT and creating sustainability across the continent, with hot topics including leveraging sustainability as a profitability driver (Tracy Bolton, 麻豆原创 Africa) and building a sustainably powered continent (Dr Liangzhou Fang, Huawei Digital Power Technologies).<\/p>\n<p>Solar energy, the pursuit of zero carbon and exploring green investment models were also in focus.\u00a0 An engaging panel discussion titled \u2018The Gigawatt Gap\u2019, unpacked the importance of creating African data centre ecosystems that are 4IR-ready \u2013 and green.<\/p>\n<p>Day two was filled with an exciting mix of content, ranging from the growth of women in ICT, the importance of sustainable partnerships and the future of IoT, including technology\u2019s growing importance to bridge every aspect of every industry.\u00a0 A presentation by Microsoft SA\u2019s CTO, Ravi Bhat, titled Towards 2030: Transformative technologies shaping Africa\u2019s next decade, also spoke to this theme.<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday also tackled the cost of bringing the African continent up to scratch in terms of its green credentials, and the requirement for the continent to invest in renewable energy sources.\u00a0 Several key presentations and panel discussions are on the Africa Tech Festival platform for review.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>The platform will be accessible for registered delegates for 90 days after the event \u2013 end of February 2022.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Headliners who have addressed the congress this year include the likes of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Todd Ashton (Ericsson)<\/li>\n<li>Razvan Ungureanu (Airtel Africa)<\/li>\n<li>Mark Victor (Deloitte)<\/li>\n<li>Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr (Republic of Sierra Leone)<\/li>\n<li>Douglas Baguma (Innovex)<\/li>\n<li>Ahmed Badr (International Renewable Energy Agency, IRENA)<\/li>\n<li>Fadi Pharaon (Ericsson)<\/li>\n<li>Paul Michael Scanlan (Huawei)<\/li>\n<li>Alioune Ndiaye (Orange)<\/li>\n<li>Cathy Smith (麻豆原创)<\/li>\n<li>Roy Henderson (Green Cell Technologies)<\/li>\n<li>Mahlatse Mashua (Kolisi Foundation)<\/li>\n<li>Victoria Nxumalo (Girls In STEM Trust)<\/li>\n<li>Temwani Simwaka (Standard Bank Limited)<\/li>\n<li>Nozipho T Duma (FNB South Africa)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Another key focus were discussions that looked to define the telco of tomorrow \u2013 their evolution and their continued relevance in the ever-connected world. \u00a0GSMA\u2019s latest statistics on 5G coverage show that Only 0.4% of sub-Saharan Africa is covered by 5G network, compared to 17% globally. Africa is especially far behind North America, with 76% coverage. This lag presents both challenge and opportunity for the continent\u2019s communication providers.<\/p>\n<p>However, perhaps one of the most important topics to capture the attention of all delegates, is the rapidly expanding influence, development, and deployment of Blockchain and crypto-currencies, and how this technology innovation is motivating the evolution of the finance space.<\/p>\n<p>Also, on the line-up was a look at Africa\u2019s role as an experimental fintech project, and education 4.0, education that is vital to grow the workforce of the future. \u201cIf the school\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/hashtag\/?keywords=connectivity&amp;highlightedUpdateUrns=urn%3Ali%3Aactivity%3A6863866915664859136\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">connectivity<\/a>\u00a0gap is not addressed, the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/hashtag\/?keywords=digitalgap&amp;highlightedUpdateUrns=urn%3Ali%3Aactivity%3A6863866915664859136\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0digital gap<\/a>\u00a0will continue to widen \u2013 between the advantaged &amp; connected, and the disadvantaged &amp; disconnected.\u00a0 And more broadly, research by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/ericsson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ericsson<\/a>\u00a0&amp;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/the-economist-intelligence-unit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Economist Intelligence Unit (The EIU)<\/a>\u00a0has found that a 10% increase in school connectivity = 1.1% increase in GDP per capita,\u201d commented\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ACoAAAAATb4BR2vKigBABiyQo7YxboWYtm7AYTQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fadi Pharaon<\/a>, President, Middle East &amp; Africa \u2013 Ericsson.<\/p>\n<p>Further, affordable broadband and digital access across Africa, the growth of Agritech and, of course, the development of cyber security systems to counteract current and future online and network threats.<\/p>\n<p>The festival continued its support in promoting the growth of women in technology, with the accelerateHER Africa platform once again hosting a series of thought-provoking discussions on the digital divide between the genders, what needs to happen to bridge the gap, as well as how women\u2019s contributions can benefit the entire continent.<\/p>\n<p>The importance of empowering women in the Tech industry stretches far beyond pure morality, as it is an industry fact that, if women could achieve parity with their male counterparts, then Africa\u2019s eCommerce space could grow to around $14.5 billion. The question that will feature in many of the fireside chats and panel discussions is how to incentivise both the private and public sectors to invest in the growth of women in tech?<\/p>\n<p>Thursday and Friday presented delegates with a broad cross section of panel discussions and fireside chats, in addition to presentations by a diverse range of speakers representing African and multinational corporations and organisations.<\/p>\n<p>Some of those on the line-up included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>H.E Huria Ali Mahdi (Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia Ministry of Innovation and Technology)<\/li>\n<li>Miriam Altman (University of Johannesburg)<\/li>\n<li>Bill Wang (Huawei)<\/li>\n<li>Tim Andrews (Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator<\/li>\n<li>Jacqueline Shi (Huawei Cloud)<\/li>\n<li>Dorsaf Bejaoui (Tunisie Telecom)<\/li>\n<li>Devorah West (Tony Blair Institute for Global Change)<\/li>\n<li>Ahmer Arsalan (STL)<\/li>\n<li>Jan Pilbauer (BankservAfrica)<\/li>\n<li>Mukelani Kheswa (Africa Teen Geeks)<\/li>\n<li>Dr Bello Moussa (Huawei Southern Africa)<\/li>\n<li>Tide Xu (Huawei)<\/li>\n<li>Catherine Holloway (Global Disability Innovation Hub)<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Lee Maina (Huawei)<\/li>\n<li>Alexandra Fraser (Viridian)<\/li>\n<li>Jisas Lemasagarai (GSMA)<\/li>\n<li>Alastair Long (Department for International Trade).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Whilst Friday, 12 November, included:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Ibrahim Eldeftar (Ericsson Middle East &amp; Africa)<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Eva Andr\u00e9n (Ericsson Middle East &amp; Africa)<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Nitesh Singh (Accenture South Africa)<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Harrison Byrnes (AgUnity).<\/p>\n<p>As always, underpinning tomorrow\u2019s growth and economy, are the string of entrepreneurs and start-ups who are part of the future tech generation and opportunity providers.\u00a0 Sage words of advice fromOnajite Emerhor, Head of Google Start-ups Africa reminded delegates of the golden rule around starting a new business, by saying: \u201cYou should fail. If you aren\u2019t failing it means you haven\u2019t tried.
