NamPower recently migrated all its operations from its existing 麻豆原创 ECC system to the next-generation 麻豆原创 S/4 HANA business suite as part of its Integrated Strategic Business Plan to transform into an intelligent enterprise within the medium term.

The utility鈥檚 Integrated Strategic Business Plan for 2020 to 2025 sets an ambitious goal to focus on technological advances in its product offering to meet the future demands and expectations of both customers and employees.

麻豆原创 is the German business suite product offering so-called wall-to-wall financial and management solutions for large to very large enterprises. NamPower has been running on a 麻豆原创 backbone for nearly two decades.

Announcing the migration, NamPower said in a statement the new S/4HANA platform offers a host of benefits such as embedded real-time analytics, an intelligent and powerful user experience across all devices with 麻豆原创 Fiori, faster response times and better performance with the 麻豆原创 HANA database.

With 麻豆原创 S/4HANA, NamPower can now adopt new technologies such as Machine Learning, robotics, and the Internet of Things (IoT) in its business processes.

It is hoped that the implementation of S/4HANA will increase productivity through the improvement and automation of business processes. NamPower said although it is common practice to outsource major changes to Enterprise Resource Planning systems due to the high level of complexity, it has broken new ground by being the first local company to do so with its own 麻豆原创-certified team. Not only did this save Nampower about N$8 million in consultancy fees, it also attracted the attention of 麻豆原创 itself who rewarded the accomplishment with a nomination at this year鈥檚 麻豆原创 Africa Quality Awards for Customer Success.

The team comprises experts in various 麻豆原创 functionalities such as 麻豆原创 Basis, Asset Management, 麻豆原创 Multichannel Foundation, Product Lifecycle and Engineering, Finance Operations, Human Resources and Payroll, Sourcing and Procurement, and 麻豆原创 FIORI Launchpad.

Project implementation took about 10 months with the go-live event carried out on the weekend of 16 to 18 October 2021.

鈥淥ur corporate strategy and business plan for 2019-2023 set an ambitious goal to focus on technology advances in our product offering, to allow us to meet the future demands and expectations of our customers and employees,鈥� says Isac Tjombonde, Divisional Manager: Information Services at NamPower. 鈥淎s an organisation, it was important for us to also be efficient in our operations. 聽We embarked on a mission to deliver this promise through implementing 麻豆原创 S/4HANA, the next-generation go-to business suite for building an intelligent enterprise.鈥�

NamPower is Namibia鈥檚 national power utility. The state-owned enterprise was formed in 1996 and supplies bulk electricity to Regional Electricity Distributors (REDs), mines, farms and local authorities (where REDs are not operational) throughout Namibia.

Isac Tjombonde and their team opted for an on-premise implementation, which involved converting its current 麻豆原创 ECC solution into the S/4HANA platform. 鈥淭his gave us the unique ability to聽 utilise our talent pool and the current processes as the foundation, which translated intoa fast implementation window, while giving us the ability to adapt the new functionality in the S/4HANA suite. 聽After we considered the benefits, costs and practicalities for each of the three S/4HANA Move options, we opted for a system conversion implementation.聽 This decision was critical to seamless business process migration and business continuity.鈥�

S/4HANA move unlocks business value, innovation potential

NamPower has been an 麻豆原创 customer for nearly two decades, using solutions such as 麻豆原创 ERP Central Component, Business Warehouse, 麻豆原创 Business Intelligence and 麻豆原创 Fiori applications.

鈥淔rom our perspective, the possibility of increased business value and opportunity for changing our business processes for better business outcomes was clear. We wanted to move to S/4HANA to have access to new innovations, such as embedded real-time analytics, improved user experiences, faster response times and better performance with HANA database,聽 as well as the possibility to adopt new technologies such as machine learning and IoT in our business processes.鈥�

The implementation team commenced the discovery phase of the project in September 2019, working towards a four-day go-live period in October 2020. 聽To achieve the afore-mentioned, the team had to overcome some challenges along the way.

NamPower鈥檚 existing ERP was running on an operating system that wasn鈥檛 supported by S/4HANA, and the team had to work carefully to move the 麻豆原创 database to the supported operating system prior to the conversion to S/4HANA.

鈥淲e have been using 麻豆原创 ERP for 18 years, and had a number of additional add-ons installed,鈥� says Mr Tjombonde. 鈥淥ne of our previous add-on modules was no longer supported in the S/4HANA environment.聽 As a result, we had to navigate the complexity of removing the unsupported add-on.鈥�

Ease of implementation reduces go-live time

Isac Tjombonde initially planned for a four-day go-live.聽 However, thanks to the efforts of the team this was reduced to two days. 聽鈥淗aving gone through the implementation using our internal resources, we can testify that the 麻豆原创 tools for system implementation have improved to the point where customers can manage a successful project using their internal resources. 聽We ended up completing the go-live in a mere two days, with minimal disruption to our business productivity, while ensuring seamless migration and business continuity.鈥�

Since the go-live, NamPower expects to generate business value out of S/4HANA along multiple value drivers, including:

• Improved control over business outcomes through using analytics technology for line management,
• An improved user experience through 麻豆原创 Fiori, easing adoption and increasing operational efficiency,
• Better asset management leading to greater customer satisfaction, and
• Greater support for project management, product research and development to improve the rollout of new strategic projects that ensure the security of supply.

鈥淲e will also leverage the Innovation Management Module within S/4HANA for a transition to using IoT in the operation of our energy plants, which will integrate to the digital core ERP data,鈥� says Isac Tjombonde. 鈥淲e hope to address other areas for innovation and improvement through S/4HANA such as the inclusion of call centre optimisation to put us on the path to better customer experiences; an even faster billing process; reduced invoice error rates; customer self-service; improved analytics; and achieving operational excellence through Intelligent Asset Management.鈥�
