JOHANNESBURG, South Africa 麻豆原创 Africa has concluded its latest Hack2Build Africa partner event, with consulting firm Bayajula Services emerging as the overall winner.

The Hack2Build Africa event was held in May and saw eight partner teams from South Africa and West Africa spend seven days building compelling solution prototypes using 麻豆原创 Build, a low-code app development and automation platform. A team of 麻豆原创 solution architects and product management experts provided technical support to ensure the success of the partner solutions.

麻豆原创 Africa Chief Operating Officer Tracy Bolton says: “Innovation lies at the heart of everything we do at 麻豆原创. It is only through collaboration with our valued partner ecosystem that we can revitalise and revolutionise the way we support the digital transformation aspirations of organisations across the continent.”

Winning innovation enhances procurement planning

Bayajula Services’ winning concept is a cloud-based automated procurement planning solution that enables organisations to plan and manage their procurement spend, allowing integration with strategic sourcing and operational procurement systems. The solution is built on the 麻豆原创 Business Technology Platform using 麻豆原创 Build.

鈥淲e are thrilled to be recognised by 麻豆原创 as the leading solution in the recent Hack2Build Event and look forward to adding transparency across critical procurement processes in Africa,鈥 says Busisiwe Sibanyoni, Executive Director at Bayajula.

Runners-up included EPI-USE Africa for its case management tool, and EY Nigeria for a business partner authentication solution.

Tshepo Mahloko, Head of 麻豆原创 Co-Innovation Lab: Africa at 麻豆原创, notes the potential of low-code solutions to accelerate innovation. “Low-code solutions such as 麻豆原创 Build provide easy, intuitive ways of developing new applications without the need for extensive coding proficiency. This can accelerate time-to-value, enhance ROI, reduce total cost of development through the rapid development of minimum viable products, and unify development experiences for application and process innovation.”

Partners leverage Build for innovation

A previous Hack2Build event held in February saw 20 partner organisations from 11 countries in EMEA South participate in a two-day Demo Jam to build solution prototypes using 麻豆原创 Build.

The winner of this event was Merlynn, who developed a prototype Digital Fraud Review Panel which aims to prevent payment fraud within procurement and payment systems. Merlynn’s Decisioning Digital Twin Technology enables organisations to deploy a digital team of fraud experts within their 麻豆原创 payment system to enhance existing controls.

The Digital Fraud Review Panel acts as a second set of eyes that monitors payment activity in real-time, identifies potential fraud and stops the payment before money flows out of the organisation, all integrated into 麻豆原创 via API. Merlynn鈥檚 Digital Fraud review panel solution is now listed on the 麻豆原创 Store.

Mahloko says the Hack2Build events serve as a powerful platform for African partner organisations to showcase their capabilities, harness the potential of the 麻豆原创 Business Technology Platform, and drive innovation throughout the region. “The 麻豆原创 Co-Innovation Lab will continue to work in close collaboration with our valued partners to support the development of their solutions and take their innovations to market.”

The 麻豆原创 Co-Innovation Lab is hosting a Hack2Build event for African partner organisations in Q4 of 2023 and will provide an opportunity for partners to turn their innovative solution ideas into real customer solutions. For more information, please visit

Amid a flurry of fast-tracked digital transformation initiatives over the past few years, hyperautomation has emerged as an essential approach in the drive toward operational efficiency and seamless customer experiences.

For companies seeking to counteract the disruptive effects of the pandemic and its ripple effects on global supply chains, hyperautomation can ease the burden that repetitive processes and legacy infrastructure place on organisations.

Hyperautomation is used by businesses to identify, vet and automate as many business and IT processes as possible. It involves the orchestrated use of multiple technologies, tools and platforms, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotic process automation, business process management suites, low-code/no-code tools, and a broad range of other process and task automation tools.

Listed by Gartner as , hyperautomation is used by innovation-led organisations to drive operational efficiency, improve decision-making, and shift to a more prescriptive or predictive state.

In fact, Gartner believes hyperautomation is shifting from a nice-to-have to a condition of survival for many organisations. This is partly because, at its core, hyperautomation holds the promise of eliminating outdated work processes which are often cited by companies as a top workforce issue.

Shifting the needle on hyperautomation maturity

The precise manner of how hyperautomation is adopted within the organisation depends on which stage the business is at in its automation journey.

At the lower end of the spectrum are companies with mostly ad-hoc, manual and often paper-based processes. Here, tools such as low-code/no-code, digital forms, process modelling and analytics may be used to unlock immediate benefits. For example, a prototype developed at the 麻豆原创 Co-Innovation Lab would help South African cities reduce the pressure on call centres through a simple self-service app that allows residents to report service issues via their mobile phones.

Companies can move to the next stage of automation maturity by integrating their disparate data and processes to deliver integrated experiences. Here, companies may identify repetitive actions and deploy tools such as AI to automate responses, extend their channels of engagement with customers and reduce the workload on service teams. Aspects such as enterprise integration, multi-channel experiences and the use of bots come into play during this stage.

Integration can be hugely beneficial. One found that, while 57% of organisations that are involved with enterprise integration projects hoped to achieve improved data visibility, 90% actually reported improved data visibility when the project was complete. And while 56% hoped for greater business agility, 86% reported real gains in business agility following their integration project.

As companies standardise their end-to-end processes and adopt automation best practices, they may utilise process exploration, big data and process monitoring to identify loopholes for automation. This could take the form of simplification of key business processes.

For example, a company may choose to leverage structured and unstructured big data to better understand customer preferences prior to a sales engagement, identifying patterns or trends, identifying products of interest, reducing preparation time and delivering a more personalised experience.

Toward seamless automated processes and experiences

When automation capabilities mature, companies may move closer to the ideal of seamless automation that blends human-led and digital experiences.

Here, aspects such as robotic process automation come into play, with companies leveraging prebuilt content via process flows, forms, business rules and process visibility dashboards to trigger tasks autonomously and automate complex tasks.

This frees up vital internal resources and eliminates the need for inefficient manual processes, leaving workers to focus on higher-value tasks that drive greater customer satisfaction, operational efficiency and bottom-line results.

While few companies can claim this level of automation maturity, any company that is ready to leverage automation can drive continuous intelligence and enable a culture of predictive working.

Companies that are at the aspirational stage of their automation journeys can benefit from prioritising certain key activities, including:

  • Leveraging process excellence;
  • Shifting the company culture to one of exception-based working;
  • Adopting predictive insights to improve decision-making;
  • Improving the accuracy of their planning while also improving operational execution;
  • Achieving a shift in mindset throughout the organisation to one of ‘automate-first’; and
  • Elevating the value of human roles by eliminating lower-impact, manually-intensive work and allowing skilled resources to focus on value-generating activities.

All companies with aspirations of becoming an intelligent enterprise can benefit from investment in hyperautomation. Partnering with an expert tech provider can also ease the process of discovering, designing and delivering an effective hyperautomation strategy that can unlock greater efficiency, improved customer experiences, more accurate decision-making and increased competitiveness.

Small businesses, that are unable to afford to build software from scratch, have taken to this drag-and-drop system with glee.

When I first started working on the听Mail & Guardian鈥檚听website, the first news site in Africa, I had to learn to code听. HyperText Markup Language is the glue that holds the internet together 鈥 and makes those underlined blue links click through to another page.

It was 1998 and internet publishing was in its infancy. Things like content management systems (CMS) for creating a database of stories and publishing them automatically were still in the future. Word麻豆原创 鈥 the most widely used publishing system 鈥 was still years away.

Everything we did was manual. We wrote the stories and then used an HTML editor app to build the page. Then we had to use a file transfer protocol (FTP) app to upload that file to our servers. Any images had to be separately uploaded. It was necessary technical admin because the software that is widely used now didn鈥檛 exist yet.

In the 20 years since, internet publishing software has become so simple. It鈥檚 possible for a tech neophyte to publish their own website within a few hours, using any number of hosting services and watching a YouTube instructional video.

Coding is something that happens in the background, especially using Word麻豆原创, which most of us have never seen nor understand.

Nor should we. As trite as it is, I have compared tech to driving a car when explaining why it鈥檚 too complicated. Everyone understands how cars work. You use the key to unlock and then drive them. How many people know or understand how an internal combustion engine works? Nor should they.

A low-code future opens doors for small businesses

In the last 30 years, as computers and then smartphones have become mainstream, people have been forced to learn a lot of technical stuff they don鈥檛 need to. It鈥檚 been one of my ongoing bugbears with the consumer technology industry: it has tried to entice buyers of shiny gadgets by impressing them with the billions of transistors on a computer chip, or how many megapixels the camera has. Most of us don鈥檛 need to see, nor understand the complexity of, what鈥檚 under the hood of our cars or our phones. This ease of use is coming to other parts of the tech universe 鈥 most notably in using services.

Often called 鈥渓ow-code鈥 or 鈥渘o-code鈥 this is a way of using payment services, online shops and web publishing for anyone who has a small amount of tech understanding. Want to start an e-commerce store? Use听听to help you build it. Need payments? Plug in one of the many such services. If you run a yoga or pilates studio,听听does it all for the instructor and lets people (literally) book their own time slot and pay for it. Small businesses, that are unable to afford to build software from scratch, have taken to 鈥榣ow-code鈥 with glee.

Software giant 麻豆原创 is the latest big firm to adopt this methodology. Using drag-and-drop to create your own apps and services allows the average user 鈥 and not an expensive developer 鈥 to build their own software. Instead of bringing in a mechanic, the actual drivers can choose what they want. With a global shortage of software developers expected in the next few years, it also frees up a business from yet another business congestion.

It鈥檚 one of the ways small businesses are leading the world.

With the release of听, partners and developers around the globe are discovering new opportunities with #nocode.

The 麻豆原创 Co-Innovation Lab Africa hosts hackathons and Partner Innovation Days, where teams engage with new technologies and creative problem solving. Recently the Co-Innovation Lab demoed a Smart City app, which combines 麻豆原创听听and 麻豆原创 backend tools, including Workflow Management, to streamline service requests in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Team (clockwise): Tshepo Mahloko, Phillip Phiri, Sikhumbuzo Dlamini, Seatile Vinolia Nakedi

Tell us first about the Co-Innovation Lab and what you鈥檙e working on.

Tshepo Mahloko:听I鈥檓 responsible for the Co-Innovation lab in Africa, and we are one of about 14 labs globally. We work with partners to help them build solutions on our platforms. Typically, we enable them on the 麻豆原创 Business Technology Platform for instance to build side-by-side extensions for some of our business systems like S/4HANA. Sometimes the partner may have an application of their own which they would like to integrate with 麻豆原创 business systems, we help with this as well amongst other things.

We provide this assistance at the moment through an offering we call #Hack2Build, which is a rapid prototyping initiative to drive early-stage inspiration, use case exploration and technology adoption for 麻豆原创 partners. In the seven days of #Hack2Build partners have an opportunity to try out their ideas and put their 麻豆原创 knowledge into practise by applying a combination of technologies to solve business challenges and develop innovative solutions supported by 麻豆原创 experts.

The whole aim is not just about having a winner for the event, what follows is what we call the build phase, where we engage with them one-on-one to help them take their prototypes to actual solutions. In the future, we hope to host a Hack2Build event focused on low-code no-code with 麻豆原创 AppGyver.

What were your roles in the Smart City demo?

Phillip Phiri:听For this project I was mostly behind the scenes, getting the integration with BTP working and also with our business rules and Workflow Management. We鈥檙e trying to get as many 麻豆原创 backend services to work with it, just to showcase how you can have a full stack app, but also sticking with the low-code/no-code theme, so we picked out a few tools within BTP that would go well with 麻豆原创 AppGyver.

Seatile Vinolia Nakedi:听I am the intern of the whole group and basically I touch on everything that the guys allow me to work on which is great, some of it strictly development as well. On the end to end solution with AppGyver, I worked with Philip in terms of the business rules and Workflow. I played with AppGyver a little bit also and enjoyed it, lots of drag-and-drop, nothing too hectic.

Sikhumbuzo Dlamini:听I鈥檓 a full stack developer, so covering basically everything from front- to backend, mostly working with 麻豆原创-related technologies.

Tell us about Partner Innovation Day and the Smart City App.

Tshepo Mahloko:听Partner Innovation Day is an opportunity for partners to hear from 麻豆原创 on the latest updates with regards to our technology platform and partner support offerings that can help them innovate with 麻豆原创. Each Partner Innovation day has a technology focus, which in this case was low-code/no-code development with 麻豆原创 AppGyver. We also built a demo to demonstrate the practical use of the technology.

In this case we wanted to demonstrate that low-code/no-code is real and that you can build a really compelling application that integrates into an 麻豆原创 backend. We decided to go with a smart city use case because we felt that there are endless requirements for citizen applications within a city/municipal context, which makes it a good fit for rapid application development.

As a city, you respond to natural disasters, service requests, pandemics, and you have such a huge audience of citizens that often times requires a very close engagement through various platforms. Being able to put an application together and deploy it in a place where citizens can access it very quickly is what AppGyver promises to do.

Through this app, citizens can log service requests and get the latest update on issues logged anytime of the day, whether it鈥檚 a burst water pipe, a pothole or streetlights that are out. With the intelligence built on 麻豆原创 BTP we were able to implement some automation that allows for immediate feedback for the citizen. Most of the cities would already have some sort of backend used to handle tickets, so we decided to use AppGyver for the citizen app frontend because it鈥檚 very quick to develop these type of solutions on the platform and get them in the hands of the citizens, whether they are on native or web. That鈥檚 the beautiful thing about AppGyver.

How was it working with 麻豆原创 AppGyver alongside 麻豆原创 backend tools?

Phillip Phiri:听We really wanted to stick to the whole theme of low-code/no-code. We quickly learned that from AppGyver, we can call APIs and that was a great sign that we can get something working over here, as long as we can send data from AppGyver. Whatever payload we were getting from AppGyver, we could work with that data, format and change it.

Tshepo Mahloko:听One thing we realized is when you take a picture with AppGyver, it uses your phone camera鈥檚 full might, so the file comes as a high-definition image and converting it to Base64 results in a huge payload. We were thinking about how we could reduce it, but thought it might be too complex for AppGyver and that we may need to write custom code on BTP.

Sikhumbuzo quickly looked it up and found the compress picture flow function, and within a few minutes we plugged it into our flow and we were compressing pictures. I was totally impressed by that. From the time we found the solution, to having it implemented and working in our app was about five minutes. That鈥檚 truly incredible.

Phillip Phiri:听When I saw it in action, that鈥檚 when I became a believer. You could very quickly come up with an idea, drag a few components onto a screen and boom, here鈥檚 an app, and it鈥檚 fully functional. Having built mobile apps before, typically you鈥檙e looking at a week just to get your layout right, getting the button to listen to events, and doing debugging.

The value in this is huge 鈥 even in a day, you can already have an app out there. You can show it to somebody important and focus on the really important bits like core functionality and the value given to your customer or users.

What鈥檚 most exciting for the partners using 麻豆原创 AppGyver moving forward?

Phillip Phiri:听I see this really fitting in well, especially for our hackathons. What I envision with AppGyver with the partners is that they鈥檒l have a little more freedom to build their apps and then take advantage of that value add, which is that business logic behind the scenes that they鈥檙e really there for.

Tshepo Mahloko:听I agree with Phillip on this, it will be a big hit for our Hackathons. A lot of the intelligent technologies that one might want to leverage for their solutions are available through APIs. From what I鈥檝e seen with this demo that we built, it鈥檚 very easy to integrate and call those APIs, and get feedback with AppGyver. At the end of the day, one can focus on building the value around their solution rather than trying to hack through code just to invoke APIs from different systems and coordinate that logic.

German software giant develops an anyone-can-do-it platform

Last week, software giant 麻豆原创 told a global audience of developers 鈥 those IT high priests who know the secrets of the universe 鈥 that it is giving those secrets up. 麻豆原创 used its annual TechEd conference in Las Vegas to go low code, launching 麻豆原创 Build, an anyone-can-do-it platform to develop applications faster and make automation easier.

Low code is a way of creating an app by drag-and-drop. Instead of writing actual software code, this uses a much simpler interface that lets people with any skills level make their own business apps.

Most businesses use software coders to build an app, but this methodology lets the people who will be using the app build it themselves. Not only does it let them make the app they want much faster and cheaper, they can use this system to automate processes.

Low code is not a new idea, and 麻豆原创 Build combines three existing 麻豆原创 solutions into one. So why is this so important?

For one thing, the German giant is the third-largest publicly traded software company by revenue in the world. It says 77% of the world鈥檚 transaction revenue touches an 麻豆原创 software system. For another, it鈥檚 responding to changes that affect businesses profoundly.

鈥溌槎乖 Build brings together the world鈥檚 most powerful business applications with a platform that鈥檚 been designed to rapidly unleash business users鈥 expertise,鈥 says 麻豆原创 chief technology officer Juergen Mueller. 鈥溌槎乖 Build and the full suite of innovations we鈥檙e launching today … help customers future-proof their business and extract maximum value from their technology investments.鈥

One development it鈥檚 intended to future-proof against is a predicted global shortfall of 4-million software developers by 2025.

鈥淲e have to unleash the expertise of those who know the business best 鈥 the business users,鈥 Mueller told his audience of IT professionals.

鈥淲e can鈥檛 just rely on a finite resource of professional developers 鈥 we need to find a new approach,鈥 麻豆原创 executive board member Julia White tells the FM.

That鈥檚 also why 麻豆原创 is committed to training 2-million people worldwide by 2025 to develop with 麻豆原创 tools, tripling the number of free courses available on 麻豆原创 Learning, in partnership with the Coursera learning platform.

Low code has the potential to change the shape of most technology businesses. They鈥檒l hire tech skills, but they won鈥檛 always go into the IT department. Those skills and talents will also be used in听human resources, sales and procurement. They will augment rather than replace professional developers, who will be needed more than ever; older IT directors, maybe not so much. The gatekeeper role large IT departments enjoy will be eroded, with some coding and buying decisions managed by business users themselves. According to Gartner, by 2025 about 70%-80% of all apps will be built by nondevelopers.

Geoff Scott of the US 麻豆原创 Users鈥 Group was blunt about this shift: 鈥淥ne of the things that has to happen is convincing the IT community that it can give back some of this control.

鈥淪ome of this can be given back to the business users to do on their own. I don鈥檛 think that happens tomorrow, that鈥檚 a journey in itself. But I think we finally have the tools and capabilities to make a credible claim to the IT community: can you give some of this back? Please?

鈥淭hey don鈥檛 have to hold on so tight. Because they鈥檙e not going to get the headcount they need to accomplish everything that needs to be done in a rapidly changing environment.鈥

麻豆原创 presented a good case and a clear roadmap for 麻豆原创 Build at TechEd. But as Mueller pointed out, 鈥渋t takes customers a long time 鈥 much longer than we give them credit for 鈥 to make these changes. They can move in five-year cycles, not five-month cycles.鈥

Which makes it curious that Mueller was talking to the wrong audience for his big announcement: developers.

If they鈥檙e going to convince organisations to change, they鈥檒l have to lobby directly the business users they want to empower. Or what happened in Vegas last week may stay in Vegas.

With the upcoming release of 麻豆原创 AppGyver, partners and developers around the globe are discovering new opportunities with #nocode in AppGyver. The 麻豆原创 Co-Innovation Lab Africa hosts hackathons and Partner Innovation Days, where teams engage with new technologies and creative problem solving. Recently the Co-Innovation Lab demoed a Smart City app, which combines AppGyver and 麻豆原创 backend tools to streamline service requests in Johannesburg, South Africa.

&#虫1蹿539;听Tell us first about the Co-Innovation Lab and what you鈥檙e working on.

Tshepo Mahloko:听I鈥檓 responsible for the Co-Innovation lab in Africa, and we are one of about 14 labs globally. We work with partners to help them build solutions on our platforms. Typically, we enable them on the 麻豆原创 Business Technology Platform (BTP) for instance to build side-by-side extensions for some of our business systems like S/4HANA.

&#虫1蹿539;听What were your roles in the Smart City demo?

Phillip Phiri:听For this project I was mostly behind the scenes, getting the integration with BTP working and also with our business rules and workflow. We鈥檙e trying to get as many 麻豆原创 backend services to work with it, just to showcase how you can have a full stack app, but also sticking with the low-code/no-code theme, so we picked out a few tools within BTP that would go well with AppGyver.

&#虫1蹿539;听Tell us about Partner Innovation Day and the Smart City App.

&#虫1蹿539;听How was it working with AppGyver alongside 麻豆原创 services?

&#虫1蹿539;听What鈥檚 most exciting for the partners using AppGyver moving forward?
