Can multicloud be simplified to the point where anything鈥檚 possible?
Dimension Data logo (PRNewsfoto/Dimension Data)

Today, multicloud is the new reality 鈥 and it will be so tomorrow. We don鈥檛 believe it鈥檚 true that all organisations are on a journey to deploy workloads to a single hyperscaler 鈥 and the research supports that view.

As many as 76% of cloud buyers now use multiple cloud providers. More than half of organisations are planning hybrid cloud deployments between private and public cloud; 48% plan to increase their cloud spending; and 66% want to improve their cloud security this year.

聽is the cloud market from now on. But your journey isn鈥檛 likely to be linear. To set yourself up for success, expect a continuous cycle of transformation and optimisation, delivering incremental improvements and increased value with each step.

Keeping cloud simple is a complex matter

Most organisations understand they must overcome some challenges in adopting cloud, and those challenges are multiplied with multiple clouds.

This is never simple, whether it鈥檚 managing multiple cloud partners; creating secure, consistent environments across managed public cloud, on-premises and聽; or juggling the needs of traditional and cloud-native applications.

Along with increased complexity comes increased cyber crime vulnerability. Your business growth can also slow down to a snail鈥檚 pace when governance, risk and compliance measures become increasingly onerous. Given that most cloud vendors are seeking some form of lock-in agreement, managing multicloud landscapes can be costly, too. Even getting visibility of your entire estate doesn鈥檛 come cheap.

Add to this the upskilling of your organisation to manage two of the major public-cloud operators and a private cloud, for example, and suddenly your investment in people, processes and certifications becomes massive. It鈥檚 no mystery why as many as 70% of businesses rely on聽聽like us to help them keep things simpler.

Lawter is a Belgian chemicals manufacturer and a longstanding client of ours. Initially, they moved to us from an incumbent supplier to manage their 麻豆原创 estate on top of a private cloud. We鈥檙e now moving those same workloads from private cloud onto Azure, all while delivering a consistent managed service for their 麻豆原创 Basis environment. We鈥檙e giving them full flexibility to choose the flavour of multicloud they need, but with the consistency and simplicity of our managed services.

Your employees are your secret sauce

All cloud challenges are hard to solve without skilled employees. And unless you have an enormous IT budget, you鈥檙e unlikely to have a deep bench. All of this slows your pace of innovation because your staff is focused elsewhere. Getting new services to market requires fast development 鈥 which is one of the reasons why cloud spending is no longer just the domain of the CIO. It鈥檚 not only about cost savings for the lines of business, but also about using cloud services to invest and innovate.

Another of our clients, Henkel, a chemicals manufacturer, was driven by the need to simplify a complex environment of multiple hybrid and on-premises contact centres into a single, cloud-based solution. Following our successfully orchestrated, remote migration during COVID-19, the cloud-based contact centre solution now gives them the flexibility to effectively manage their costs while introducing digital channels and operational enhancements that their customers and service teams were awaiting.

Everything鈥檚 simple, anything鈥檚 possible

Multicloud as a service is about realising the art of the possible. Because you often use more than one cloud provider, it should make it simpler to manage complexity. But it should also give you cloud multi-vision so you can have your eyes and ears everywhere across your IT estate in an instant, combined with the intelligence and insight that modern technologies like AI and predictive analytics deliver to put you in control.

And when it comes to innovation, you鈥檒l want to take the brakes off, which means you need to optimise your application workloads through application modernisation and hosting initiatives aimed at freeing up your employees. With multicloud, innovation is well within your reach.

McDonald鈥檚 needed a system that would give them an overview of their entire spectrum of HCM activities and integrated with its 麻豆原创 financial system. By using 麻豆原创 HCM they鈥檙e now positioned to grow and enhance their operations for the next 20 years.

Vision

Enabling human resources

McDonald鈥檚 opened its first restaurant in South Africa in November 1995. Today, they operate over 200 restaurants across South Africa.

McDonald鈥檚 acquired a human resources system that did not include the whole spectrum of HCM activities and didn鈥檛 integrate easily with its 麻豆原创 financial system.

A lack of integration and automation created multiple challenges. Many critical HCM processes were still manual, creating silos of information and the risk of information being lost.

Internal disciplines such as human resources often receive less attention, frequently remaining paper based and inefficient. There was a tendency to believe that automation and integration of diverse activities such as training, leave, time and talent management and payroll were difficult, if not impossible.

Transformation

Taking care of the most聽 valuable asset

McDonald鈥檚 is renowned for its training throughout the world. They have trained and employed over 10,000 South Africans at various levels, including franchisees, restaurant managers and crew.

A consultative approach was followed internally, ensuring that everyone agreed on what the company needed from the solution, what end users needed and what had to be done to make the implementation of the desired outcomes happen as smoothly as possible.

McDonald鈥檚 chose to implement 麻豆原创 HCM. An initial seven-month project period was extended to nine months in order to accommodate the need for McDonald鈥檚 HR employees to do their usual work in addition to assisting with the migration of data into the new system and attending training sessions.

Results

Full visibility

For the first time, the company is able to do leave provisioning and employee relations and training have moved into a different league. McDonald鈥檚 believes they are now superbly positioned to grow and continue enhancing operations for the next 20 years, with all aspects of human capital management automated for 200 sites and 8,000 employees countrywide. In addition to the scalability the system has given McDonald鈥檚 in terms of fundamentals such as payroll, financials, and controlling, the company now has insight into and capabilities for real-time best practice management of disciplines such as employment equity, organisational position, talent, time, and leave management across the entire, diverse spectrum of its employees.

Collecting, interpreting and storing data is a critical commodity in business.

Business data has become a commodity, which makes investing in the right technology a critical part of any successful business strategy, says Dr Setumo Mohapi, Chief Go-to-Market Officer from Dimension Data.

The strategic application of technology has become a business necessity. It is the enabler of productivity and agility, the driver of scale and mobility, and the tool that can support the organisation in fully realising scale, opportunity and functionality.

In the evolving digital landscape, organisations can leverage technology as a service, as a tool that allows for scale up or down on demand, and as a platform from which to launch additional services and solutions.

However, the consistent evolution of technology to support improved processes and capabilities does introduce significant change, and the upcoming end-of-support deadline for 麻豆原创 customers is a change that will impact business-critical processes for numerous organisations globally. In 2027, 麻豆原创 finally says goodbye to its stalwart ERP system, ECC6 and 麻豆原创 S/4HANA becomes the new normal.

It鈥檚 not a sudden move. 麻豆原创 has had the deadline on the cards for quite some time, but the goalposts are now set in stone and the next five years should see organisations focus on strategies that will allow them to make the move to 麻豆原创 S/4HANA with minimum disruption.

All 麻豆原创 customers have to migrate their systems across to the new platform and this requires significant planning to overcome some of the biggest challenges that organisations face when it comes to making such a disruptive move 鈥 skills to manage the process; optimising processes and applications; and managing risk.

麻豆原创 S/4HANA migration challenges

As can be expected, there are numerous challenges when changing a critical business system like 麻豆原创 ERP, but three challenges stand out and require the business to take note of.

Firstly, the organisation has to ensure a deep understanding of its existing operating environment to identify risks and potential pitfalls and to manage these appropriately. A lack of visibility of existing business processes and infrastructure can end up costing the business serious time and money when making the move to 麻豆原创 S/4HANA, and these are two resources that organisations usually have in short supply.

The second challenge is that the move to 麻豆原创 S/4 HANA is not a simple lift and shift and the six years left to deadline is not as long as it sounds, especially if you consider how many boxes need to be checked, i鈥檚 dotted and t鈥檚 crossed. You can鈥檛 just replace the existing infrastructure and systems; migration likely needs either a full 麻豆原创 ERP re-implementation or a significant data shift and this has to take the requisite end-user training and process optimisation into account. This introduces another challenge: skills. There are not enough people with the right skillsets to help every business make the right move at speed. This skills crisis was already existent due to geopolitical challenges and limitations, but has been made even more complex and challenging thanks to the pandemic.

The last challenge is optimisation. What鈥檚 more important than meeting the 麻豆原创 S/4 HANA deadline is using the opportunity to optimise existing processes and functionality to align to modern data processing methods and get the most business value from 麻豆原创 S/4HANA. This move is an opportunity to refine the capabilities of the business and fully realise the potential of the new platform, but it is equally the time to draw a hard line under legacy approaches, applications and models. Don鈥檛 lift old problems into a new architecture.

The business benefit of 麻豆原创 S/4HANA running in the cloud

麻豆原创 S/4 HANA comes with numerous business benefits, especially when deployed on a hyper-scaler cloud platform like Microsoft Azure. If managed properly, cloud technology can help the organisation to scale up or down at speed to accommodate changing computing demands and other business drivers like mergers, acquisitions and divestitures.

Benefits like access to multiple application and data management services and improved functional capacity; reduced risk; transformation of the total cost of ownership and delivery of measurable cost benefits to the business; and utilising the myriad benefits that come with the as a service business model. As stated before, the move to the new platform introduces several challenges that have to be overcome to realise the business benefits. The challenges, however, do not need to be faced alone, Dimension Data has the experience to migrate and operate a next-generation, mission-critical ERP landscape that delivers unparalleled uptime, solid service delivery, application innovation, all at a significant scale

In 2027, organisations that use the ECC version of 麻豆原创 ERP are going to hit the end-of-support deadline.

They will have to migrate their ERP applications across to 麻豆原创 S/4HANA and undertake a lengthy process to ensure that this migration is as seamless as possible and does not impact any critical business operations.

While 麻豆原创 is a trusted solution that delivers exceptional value for many organisations with an ERP platform, there is still one question that every organisation wants answered 鈥 why?

Why should they undergo this migration and overcome numerous logistical challenges just to meet this deadline?

Pieter Potgieter, Senior Commercial Manager from Dimension Data explains that the answer lies in 4 measurable and valuable business benefits that come with 麻豆原创 S/4HANA operated in the cloud on a hyper-scaler like Microsoft Azure:

1 – Serving customers better

In the always-on, always-connected economy we operate in today, organisations run a very real risk of losing business and customers if their critical business applications are not available and performing to expectation.

Customers demand swift and flawless service, regardless of industry, and the capability to serve and charge customers are highly dependent on the ERP solution at the centre of the application landscape.

For this reason, the adoption of a modern and intelligent ERP system like 麻豆原创 S/4HANA can drastically alter a customer鈥檚 experience of an organisation.

If you combine this with the power of cloud and a hyper-scaler鈥檚 ability to provide highly available infrastructure at reasonable cost, you have a powerful basis for digitally enabled organisation, poised for growth.

2 鈥 Predictable and manageable cost

Traditionally in on-premise 麻豆原创 deployments, environments had to be sized to cater for peak processing requirements like month end financial close or production runs.

This meant that the business paid a premium for already expensive hardware that operated at 15% efficiency for 90% of the time.

This was exacerbated by the unpredictable business demands in the form of ad-hoc projects, unexpected growth and other business activities like mergers and acquisitions.

Deploying S/4HANA in the cloud allows organisations to align infrastructure related expenditure with its actual real-time processing requirement in the form of OPEX and avoid costly upfront CAPEX investments.

It also significantly reduces the risk of business interruptions and project delays associated with hardware order lead times.

When you combine this with the proven capability of Dimension Data to cost-efficiently manage 麻豆原创 landscapes in the cloud, you have a powerful platform from which to operate your business without having to worry about keeping the 麻豆原创 lights on.

3 鈥 Richer insights

There is little doubt that data remains the black gold of the business world, providing insights and information that can be used to transform businesses by increasing product relevance, service delivery and customer satisfaction.

With 麻豆原创 S/4HANA, an organisation has easy access to a rich and relevant data, and when combined with Microsoft Azure鈥檚 leading analytics capabilities, provides insights that allows everyone in the business to make better decisions.

This can seamlessly be further enriched with data from other business sources like IOT and other operational systems.

4 鈥 Keeping pace with accelerating technology innovation

麻豆原创 S/4HANA and Microsoft Azure come from two organisations that invest time and money into research and development (R&D) that very few businesses can afford to match.

This not only translates into increasingly relevant features that keep pace with market demand and technology evolution, but also into immense business value.

Every valuable feature consumed from S/4HANA running on Azure means time and money you can spend on business functions that help differentiating you from your competition and making you more relevant in your industry.

And you know you are in safe hands with Dimension Data managing the entire process with highly skilled people and robust management tools from trusted partners.

Adopting 麻豆原创 S/4HANA is much more than just another software update.

It鈥檚 a revolution in how an organisation consumes services and builds applications, how it translates technology into performance, and IT into service delivery.

In a highly competitive market that is challenging to navigate, 麻豆原创 S/4HANA in the cloud provides your business with the technology partnership it needs to remain relevant and innovative without having to worry about stability, scale and capability.

In collaboration with Dimension Data, you can focus on your customers and your business with visibility across the entire technology stack.
